Happy Monday y’all! For those of you that celebrated, I hope you had a wonderful Easter. I spent some time with my fam, went to a Colorado Rapids soccer game, and ate far too much chocolate on Sunday. Gluttonous. I also got to spend some serious QT with this little face:
Aside from all of the sugar binging, I managed to hop online to register for a 5k, bringing my total registered events to four this summer. Check ‘em out!
1. Underwearness Drop Your Drawers 5k on May 31
Typically, 5k races aren’t my deal. I am far too slow and have a really hard time gunning it for such a short period of time. In fact, now that I think about it, I’m not sure I’ve run an “official” 5k other than the ones tacked onto the end of a sprint triathlon! Regardless, my friend Heidi is affiliated with the Underwearness non-profit, and I wanted to support her and the group. Plus, I kinda feel like undies should be a given in any kiddo’s life, so why not run a race that helps support that cause!
2. Elephant Rock 62-Mile Tour on June 2
This has become an annual tradition with my dad and me, so naturally, we had to ride together for the third year in a row!
When I was a kid, my dad was a serious weight lifter, but as he got older, I worried that he didn’t do enough cardio. After he saw me prepping for my 2005 bike tour, he became interested in cycling, and naturally, I encouraged him to work it into his routine. These days, my dad has become a fairly hardcore cyclist and hops on his bike at least three times each week for 35-50 miles a pop. Unfortunately for me, I tend to spend a lot more time on my mountain bike than I do on my road, so Elephant Rock is typically a day of “Heather getting schooled by her father.” As of now, it looks like this year will be no different and I will be conquering the 62 miles with minimal…if any training!
3. La Sportiva Summer Solstice 6.6 Mile Trail Race on June 22
For those of you that have read my blog for awhile, you may remember the Evergold 5k trail race I did last September.
I had never heard of the series, but Columbia was an official sponsor and had offered to comp the race for me and a friend. Angel, Cindy, Craig and I all ran the 5k, and I absolutely loved it! The single track was very tight and technical, but the environment was beautiful and there is nothing quite like that small race atmosphere, you know? Plus, how often do I place third in my age group?! Um, practically never! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anyone to run with me for the 10k in June, so I started harassing Will. Luckily, he agreed to run with me, so the two of us are going to tackle the 6.6 miles and 1600 feet of elevation gain together!
4. Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon on August 10
I’m coming back back for a do-over!
I ran the GTIS half last August, but it was a horrid experience. My back had just begun it’s downward spiral at the time, so my knee was going bonkers. It freaked out after I fell in a pothole at mile 1, and I ended up hobbling/walking the ensuing 12.1 miles. I finished the race in so much pain that I crossed the finish line and started crying, which is crazy irregular for me.
Luckily, my back issues are sorted these days, and I want a second chance at this course! It’s all gradually downhill and prime for a major PR. Plus, they ran a special a few weeks back where registration was only $15 if you managed to sneak in and get registered on that specific day. For $15, how could I not try for a redemption run?!

What’s on your agenda for the summer?

15 dollars is a great price for a half! and you can show that run who is boss this year. I have a love hate with 5ks, they are such a crazy sprint, and over so fast. I kind of like to use them for speed workouts though. I am signed up for two in April.
Yeah, that whole speed thing…. still working on it 🙂
wow.
nothing in comparison to you 🙂
$15 is an AMAZING price for a half – and totally worth that redemption run! All the best to you! As I am looking for a new job and probably moving, I have nothing on my calendar after April 28. And it’s a very strange feeling. 🙂
Where are you moving to?
I am envious of your yearly ride with your dad. I wish I could get mine to do something like that, I mean the memories!!!
what a fun line up of races! I have no idea what i’m doing, though races taper off over the summer here.
It’s fun 🙂 My mom ran a half with me last year too, but I don’t think she’ll do another one, so I need to find something to do with her.
I too signed up for GTIS for that crazy price. I also signed up for the Top of Utah full marathon in September. I am hesitant to fill in anything else because I have no idea where I will be getting a job in the next few weeks and moving to. That 10k trail race sounds great. I need to get in some trail races and mountain bike races.
From the sounds of it, a bunch of peeps signed up during that deal! I heard they had a rough time getting it organized afterwards because they weren’t expecting such a huge response 🙂 Maybe I’ll see you there!
All those races sound amazing. I want to run the first one just for the name alone. I seriously just want to tag along all summer!
Ha, right? I love that they donate underwear to kiddos who need it…not something people typically think about, but such a flipping necessity!
Stoked about the GT to IS half. We should totes have a blogger meetup before/after the race. Love that pic of you and Tals. Sooooo sweet.
Agreed! There is seriously going to be a million of us there!
i will see you at at least 2 of these! HOORAY!
Looks like you have a great summer to look forward to. I’m coming to your neck of the woods for a huge hike on the Colorado Trail this summer!
Yay! When are you coming? Which part are you hiking?
That’s an awesome deal on your “redemption” run.
I also love that you have races on top of each other for May/June. I always find that I have my strongest runs on back-to-back events. You sort of just feel in “race mode” and let er rip.
You know, I didn’t realize how close everything was until I started typing up this post! I figure July will be my rest month and then August will be half mary and backpacking trip!
After May, when I run the Wisconsin marathon, I think I might focus on some speed training, finish my 30 half marathons before 30 by June and maybe think about a fall trail race. Depending on how I feel about the marathon I might try and do another one before Chicago marathon in October. Basically I want medals:). I love that you and your dad do that ride together- so cool.
Ha, we’re so different in that sense– I literally don’t even know where 90% of my medals are at!
Sounds like you’ve got a good mix lined up!
Looks like you have some really fun races coming up. Good Luck
$15 for a half-marathon?! That’s so cheap. That’s awesome that you’re going to try and “redo” it, so to speak. I love signing up for a bunch of races at once!
