Happy Monday y’all! For those of you that celebrated, I hope you had a wonderful Easter. I spent some time with my fam, went to a Colorado Rapids soccer game, and ate far too much chocolate on Sunday. Gluttonous. I also got to spend some serious QT with this little face:
Aside from all of the sugar binging, I managed to hop online to register for a 5k, bringing my total registered events to four this summer. Check ‘em out!
1. Underwearness Drop Your Drawers 5k on May 31
Typically, 5k races aren’t my deal. I am far too slow and have a really hard time gunning it for such a short period of time. In fact, now that I think about it, I’m not sure I’ve run an “official” 5k other than the ones tacked onto the end of a sprint triathlon! Regardless, my friend Heidi is affiliated with the Underwearness non-profit, and I wanted to support her and the group. Plus, I kinda feel like undies should be a given in any kiddo’s life, so why not run a race that helps support that cause!
2. Elephant Rock 62-Mile Tour on June 2
This has become an annual tradition with my dad and me, so naturally, we had to ride together for the third year in a row!
When I was a kid, my dad was a serious weight lifter, but as he got older, I worried that he didn’t do enough cardio. After he saw me prepping for my 2005 bike tour, he became interested in cycling, and naturally, I encouraged him to work it into his routine. These days, my dad has become a fairly hardcore cyclist and hops on his bike at least three times each week for 35-50 miles a pop. Unfortunately for me, I tend to spend a lot more time on my mountain bike than I do on my road, so Elephant Rock is typically a day of “Heather getting schooled by her father.” As of now, it looks like this year will be no different and I will be conquering the 62 miles with minimal…if any training!
3. La Sportiva Summer Solstice 6.6 Mile Trail Race on June 22
For those of you that have read my blog for awhile, you may remember the Evergold 5k trail race I did last September.
I had never heard of the series, but Columbia was an official sponsor and had offered to comp the race for me and a friend. Angel, Cindy, Craig and I all ran the 5k, and I absolutely loved it! The single track was very tight and technical, but the environment was beautiful and there is nothing quite like that small race atmosphere, you know? Plus, how often do I place third in my age group?! Um, practically never! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anyone to run with me for the 10k in June, so I started harassing Will. Luckily, he agreed to run with me, so the two of us are going to tackle the 6.6 miles and 1600 feet of elevation gain together!
4. Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon on August 10
I’m coming back back for a do-over!
I ran the GTIS half last August, but it was a horrid experience. My back had just begun it’s downward spiral at the time, so my knee was going bonkers. It freaked out after I fell in a pothole at mile 1, and I ended up hobbling/walking the ensuing 12.1 miles. I finished the race in so much pain that I crossed the finish line and started crying, which is crazy irregular for me.
Luckily, my back issues are sorted these days, and I want a second chance at this course! It’s all gradually downhill and prime for a major PR. Plus, they ran a special a few weeks back where registration was only $15 if you managed to sneak in and get registered on that specific day. For $15, how could I not try for a redemption run?!
