A Disappointing Mile

Hey y’all! So I am waist-deep in real world recovery this week, so I’m trying my hardest not to go MIA again. I do still have plenty of fun stories to share regarding Outdoor Retailer, but honestly, I need to take a mini-break from all the gear talk! However, I have been submitting my gear roundups for Active Junky, so feel free to hop over there and check out my 2014 sleeping bag guide. There will be new ones published soon for packs and shoes!

Having said that, let’s talk running. In particular, my running. Y’all, it has not been going as well as I would like!

Along with the entire Front Range, I capitalized on an insane deal awhile back and am registered for the GTIS half marathon this Saturday. They ran a one-day special where registration cost $15, so you can imagine how fast it sold out! Anyway, this was the same race that destroyed my knee last year, so I was hoping for a redemption run. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that’s in the cards for me. I did an average job of building up my mileage and completed one 10-mile run as prep. I also chose to run on some insanely narrow singletrack during this long run, and it quasi-stressed my inner ankle from running on such steep embankments. I’ve ignored it for a few weeks now because it hasn’t seemed like anything major, but the niggle is still there. I’m still planning on running Saturday but I’m already worrying about a last-year reenactment. Nothing like providing excuses ahead of time as to why a race doesn’t go as planned, right?!

I’m on the left, heading into the second half of the mile

In addition to that first world problem, I am not too thrilled with my mile. Yes, I finally ran a timed mile at CrossFit and I was not happy with it! I’ve always managed to miss the timed mile days at Big Horn, so I made a point to attend this particular WOD. I know I’ve been getting faster, so I was really hoping for a mile time that would demonstrate that improvement. In short, I wanted a mile that was anywhere below 7:00. I realize that isn’t fast for some (and that many of you can maintain that for 26.2!), but breaking into the 6:XX bracket would have made me quite the happy camper! Alas, we all know where this is going….

7:02.

Damnit.

Seriously?!

Here’s the thing: when I crossed the finish line and stumbled into Big Horn’s gym, I definitely felt gassed. I gave it all I had that day, which is all I can really ask for. However, I recovered in like 2.1 seconds and immediately felt disappointed in myself. First of all, two seconds?! I totally could’ve run a few seconds faster! Secondly, I know that I can do better…much better. My 800 time is 3:03! At the very least, I would expect a 6:30-6:35. But alas, that didn’t happen. Or, at least not on that day. Argh.

So, it looks like I’m gonna focus on this little jaunt on the schedule this Saturday, and not worry about my mile for the moment. But, I’m on a mission y’all—that time is going down!

When is the last time you ran a timed mile? Happy with the results?
