Just a Colorado Gal

A Love Letter to My Mountains

Dear Colorado Mountains:

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to take a quick moment to write you a love letter, my mountains. We’ve been through a lot over the past 30 years, but in the end, I know we’ll always come back to each other. That’s what makes our relationship so important!

You and I have an undying love that revolves around our matching unbridled passion for adventure. Thus far, it seems to have worked well for us both. Granted, our love affair hasn’t been without its ups and downs. Remember that time you purposely led me astray down the wrong trail on the side of the Sawtooth? Yeah, I’m sure you don’t but I sure do! I thought you’d never lie to me but instead, I ended up on the side of a sheer rock face with no harness or ropes, clinging to a couple of quarter-inch crimp holds located 13,000 feet up in the air. Luckily, I made it off that rock safely and have nothing to show from it other than a 3” scar on my shin….but hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, mountains. We may have spent joyous times together since that day, but I haven’t forgotten!

However, I am a generous woman and I have forgiven you. Since then, we’ve created some unforgettable memories together and most of my cherished moments occurred while wrapped up in your leafy and dirt-covered arms. You’ve provided me with feet upon feet of fluffy powder for epic ski days….

…..and with miles of untouched bluebird sky above 14,000 feet. Your views are truly spectacular.

I love spending nights with you, staring at the open mountain sky, covered in twinkling stars. You can’t get views like that in the city and I am forever thankful that you’re willing to share them.

One of my favorite ways to achieve quality time together is on the trails. You offer such amazing single track for mountain biking and trail running, and I am so glad that you’re willing to provide for me. There is nothing quite like the pounding heart beat and flushed face that one gets from trail running, is there?

In short, I’m still in love with you, mountains, and I don’t foresee that changing. Here’s to another 30 years, eh?

Love,

Your Colorado Gal
