A Peek Into My Life’s Secrets: Big News!

In light of the Boston tragedy on Monday, I know this week has been especially rough on everyone. I still can’t even begin to understand, but like I posted yesterday, I don’t think my words are enough in this instance. I’m just trying to focus on the good, so I wanted to share some of my good news with y’all.

Guys, I’ve been keeping a ton of secrets from you.

If you know me in real life, I’m not sure any of this is going to be a big announcement, but since most of you don’t actually know me (stalkers aside, of course), I’m guessing some of this will be news. And actually, I have a zillion things to share, but we’re just going to focus on two of them today. Ready?

First of all, here is some really good news that may verge on the cusp of too much information: I’m healthy! Back in March, I mentioned that my life had become a roller coaster of peaks and valleys, and part of that pertained to some lab tests. I’ve debated sharing all of this with you guys because it’s very personal, but I’ve decided to talk about it because I think it’s important, especially for you gals. Long story short, I went in for my annual obgyn checkup in March and came back with some bad news: my results were abnormal and I needed to be sent in for some biopsies.

sad

Abnormal results are fairly common these days, but I was in a rare situation: you see, this exact same thing happened to me back in 2009. I went in for the biopsies then, but everything was considered low grade and mild and I was put “on watch.” This meant that I needed to return every six months for two years, just to monitor the abnormal cells. I went in for my first check-up and everything was fine. However, I went back in for my second checkup in December, 2009, and the cells had gone all crazy. Instead of of stage 1, they had made the jump to stage 2. While this wasn’t positively cervical cancer (stage 3 is the “oh shit, it’s cancer, get it out NOW!), it is a scary enough level that doctors wanted the abnormal cells immediately removed for fear that they would quickly evolve into cancer. I had the minor surgery in December, 2009, a couple days before Christmas. ‘Tis the season, right?!

Since the surgery, everything has been fine and dandy, albeit with many trips to the obgyn. Because of the surgery, I’ve had to visit the doc every six months for the past few years. As much as I love my doc, that is far more frequently than I would prefer! I went in last month for my final “on watch” checkup. All of my other checkups have been fine since the procedure, so we assumed this one would be the same. As I’ve already mentioned, unfortunately that was not the case. Some abnormal cells reared their ugly faces and once again, I was sent in for three biopsies. It took a few weeks for the lab to get the biopsy results back to me, and not going to lie: I was freaking stressed. The initial surgery in December was one of the more scary things I’ve dealt with in recent memory, and the possibility of having to go through it all over again did not make me happy. Luckily, my results came back as stage 1, so once again, I can breathe easy. Granted, this is exactly how everything shook out last time, so I’m not so naive to think that it can’t happen again. However, in the meantime, I feel a huge sense of relief!

Curious about what my second piece of good news is? In actuality, I’m flipping psyched to be able to share this portion of my life with you guys because it makes me incredibly happy: Will is moving to Colorado!

We’ve been talking about it for quite awhile now, but we needed to hammer out some details. It’s a big jump for him to make the move and I am so thankful that he is willing to migrate.  I can’t wait to actually live a life with him instead of trying to cram it in to designated weekends. Plus, now we can go on so many adventures!!!

PS Stay tuned! I have another fun announcement coming tomorrow!

What’s one piece of good news you’ve received this week?

I appreciate the need to share good news – it helps us focus (and find) some relief after this week. Hooray for Will moving to CO! 🙂

Glad to hear you are well! Health scares aren’t fun, and it’s good that you caught it early.

We received some good news last night that we aren’t moving to San Diego, which was a big questionable for us for some months now as my husbands job was potentially going to take us there. It would have been hard to move out there and not have any family around, so we are glad that we are staying here for now!

Oh wow, that would be a change! On the bright side, if it happened, I could have Will hook you up with some new friends 🙂

I’m so glad it’s all ok! I know how scary that can be, mine turned out to actually be cancerous but I am still here to tell the tale of a happy ending despite all that! So congrats on the good news, that must be a weight lifted!!

I think at times like these, we need good news even more, to help remind us that there is so, so much more good than not in this world. Waiting to hear results from medical testing/procedures is always stressful…glad your news was positive! And excited for you that Will is moving closer…long distance is hard.

Congratulations on both fronts! I know the medical stuff can be really really scary. I’m sending you positive vibes that you’ll continue to stay healthy and none of this will be serious again. Thank God for good docs that catch this stuff early, too!

In regards to Will, I’m so stinking excited for you! I did the long distance thing (Cali – Missouri) in college and it was awful. Looks like everything is falling into place. Not that I’m a stalker or anything, but from what you write, you guys are one of my favorite couples from the interwebs. 🙂

    • Reply heather at

Aww, that’s sweet, thank you! I just told Will and he said, “Make sure she knows we exist in real life!” He’s kind of a smart ass 🙂

Great news on both! Woohoo! I’m so happy for you and can’t wait to see you again.

News on my front…I moved to Salt Lake …as a single gal (which might not surprise you.) Crazy excited about all there is to explore here, and I’m that much closer to CO so I may come visit:)

Holy cow! I did know you moved to SLC but I didn’t realize you moved there as a single gal! I’m thinking some hiking adventures are in order this summer! I’ll definitely be there for summer OR, at minimum

Hooray! Once again, jumping for joy for your health. I know you two have also been working hard to get will to Colorado and am glad to see things moving along…even if it has seemed to take forever. =) Totally rad about him being able to sell his place! Now I def have to plan a trip up to see you guys…

Hi! Just recently came across your blog! Love it and your adventures. Glad you are well! Scary news from the doc! I actually had an abnormal PAP and biopsies last year. Very scary. My best friend, who also happens to be a great athlete, has been battling cervical cancer for over a year now. It’s scary stuff and she isn’t out of the woods yet. She has a great blog about her cervical cancer journey, if you are interested: http://onebigexhale.wordpress.com/

And congrats on the boy moving to Colorado! Closing the distance is always preferred! Best of luck in all!

That Will is just soooo dreamy!!! Now he will love closer to the stars 🙂

  • Reply Christine @ Love, Life, Surf at

Such great good news!! So happy Heather to hear that everything is OK on the health front. That is scary. And so so happy for you that Will is moving to Colorado! I know how hard long distance relationships can be.

My sister went through the same exact medical scare as you! Luckily it can be taken care of and I am thrilled to hear that you’re OKAY 🙂 My good news this week… Hmmmmm not so sure, although everything is really GREAT, I just wish that I had a vacation lined up in my future! But maybe SOON 🙂

  • Reply Haley @ Climb Run Lift Mom at

Try not to stress about the gyn problems. I worked in ob/gyn for years and abnormal results are unfortunately so common, but treatment is highly effective so long as you stay diligent. And yay!!!! That’s so awesome that Will is moving to CO 🙂 So happy for you both!!

  • Reply Kaitlyn at

I went through all that wonderful cervical stuff about two-three years ago. It’s the reason why I took a break from my regular teaching job and went back to graduate school full time. The stress and worrying was killing me. But, I have been cancer free for two years now! Glad to know that your scare was just that, a scare. Happy for you and Will!

  • Reply Kayla at

Glad everything is “ok” down there. I had an abnormal pap once (back before I knew anything about anything), received a pamphlet on cervical cancer, and cried for days. Our lady parts make such miracles, but can be a real pain in the ass.

I was seriously thinking #2 was going to be something like, “I’m engaged!!” haha. Glad y’all are finally going to get to be closer to each other!

So so so awesome. First and foremost about your health. Secondly about Will’s big move. Will you move into a bigger place, or will he crash with you?

  • Reply Alyssa at

Surgeries terrify me so I’m so glad you didn’t have to go through another! Since I already knew the other big news, does that qualify me as offcial stalker.
