I’ve been driving to work at the exact same time of day for five years now, and by default, I listen to the same local talk show every morning: Alice 105.9. (And for those of you that are local, no, I don’t even love them that much anymore, but it’s already a habit!) Anyway, they usually make me giggle, but I was cracking up this week when they did a piece on the Top Ten Most Popular Infomercial items.
At first, I kinda guffawed to myself because I’m not a big infomercial gal. Sure, I’ve found myself watching them at 1am after a late night out with friends and wine, but I’ve literally never picked up the phone and ordered something after seeing their sales pitch on the screen. The radio hosts claimed that most Americans owned at least four of the top ten items, and I totally laughed. I was guessing that I owned maybe……one. At best, one.
Guess what? I’m a total sellout because I own three of them!
First of all, I seriously have no idea what a Showtime Rotisserie is…anyone? Is that before my time?! Because I feel like the Thighmaster is ingrained in my brain forever and I sure as heck remember Chuck Norris’s Total Gym. And who didn’t run out and purchase Sweatin’ to the Oldies?!
Have you guessed which three I own? I’ll tell you: Proactiv, P90X, and the George Foreman Grill. I used Proactiv for a year until I freaked out about the insane amount of chemicals in the face soap (it bleaches your pillow cases!), but it definitely worked. I used P90X pretty hardcore for 90 days, but that was before I ultimately decided that I hate working out in my living room. Besides, Tony Horton started to get on my nerves, regardless of the efficacy of his program! My dad and I still have a standing joke where one of us will bend over at the waist, swing our arm in a circle, and yell, “Stir the soup!” (Anyone remember that?!) Lastly, I most definitely own a George Foreman Grill and I still use that sucker to this day! In fact, I packed it up in a box just a few short hours ago. I don’t care if that grill came from a boxer, an infomercial, or the planet Mars—it makes grilling chicken so flipping easy!
