The Best Surprise

Y’all, I need to brag: my sis and I pulled off an epic surprise yesterday!

A few months ago, my sister (who lives in Honolulu) emailed and told me that she was thinking of planning a visit back home. She had just accepted a new position and had a week-long break between her old and new job, so why not fly back to Colorado so we could all go shopping for her wedding dress together?

Obviously, I thought this sounded like a perfect plan, but here’s the catch: we decided to keep it a secret from my mom! Originally, my dad was included in the veil of secrecy, but for various reasons, we had to fill him in on the details.

One of my favorite photos of Miss and me. Yes, we bring our own Guitar Hero wherever we go!

Seriously, this surprise was flipping awesome but semi-difficult to pull off! My mom had been bugging my dad about going to their cabin on the Western slope and she kept telling him that she wanted to go over there this week. I knew I had to come up with a decent reason to make her stay in the city, and it needed to be something that she couldn’t cancel. So, I completely lied and told her we had a post-Venus de Miles appreciation luncheon to go to. I have absolutely no idea where the lie came from but it was perfect! She totally believed me and I knew she couldn’t bail, even if she wanted to—she would never do that to her daughter!

So, after confirming with Mom that I would pick her up at 1:30 for the lunch, I headed to the airport to grab my sister!

Y’all, the look of surprise on my mom’s face was absolutely priceless! Missy (my sis) and my dad chatted on the driveway for a few minutes while I walked inside the house, ready to “pick my mom up.” She was still getting ready for our supposed lunch, and she looked down the stairs at me and made a smart-ass comment about how I was still in my workout clothes from CrossFit! I totally had to bite my tongue but it made me laugh so hard. She honestly thought I’d go to a sponsor lunch wearing filthy capris and a workout tank!

When my sis walked in and yelled, “Hey Mom!”, I honestly thought Mama’s eyes would pop out of her head! She did the cliché open-and-shut her eyes a few times, almost as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing…before bursting into tears. TOTALLY WORTH IT! I know it gets hard on both of my parents having their daughter so far away. I mean, it’s not like you can just hop in your car and drive to Hawaii, so my parents and I both miss my sister incredibly.

And did I mention how excited I am to help her choose her wedding dress??!!

The winner of the Road Runner Sports giveaway is Scott…who didn’t leave any other name, but I have his email so I’ll shoot him a message right now! If you didn’t enter, never fear—I somehow acquired more than a few (read: two more!) freaking awesome giveaways that I’ll host before the end of the month. If you like Reebok or Sierra Trading Post, definitely stay tuned!

What’s the best surprise you’ve ever pulled off?

This is so awesome! I love it. While I keep good secrets I’m horrible with surprises because I want to tell the person so bad. Between DH and I we have rarely been able to surprise each other. I’d say the best surprise I ever did was when my mom first surprised my sister and me by flying us down to Florida. Once we 3 got there we then surprised my grandparents for their 50th wedding anniversary. Went off without a hitch!

That is a really great surprise! I’m horrible at keeping secrets that I am excited about. If I get my fiance a good gift for birthday or Christmas, I usually can’t wait to give it to him.

I love Sierra Trading Post, so I’m excited to see what the giveaway is! I’ve gotten some fantastic deals on there!

That’s a great surprise! I have a really hard time keeping secrets about surprises so even when I’ve planned a good one, someone usually sleuths it out 🙂

That is such a nice surprise! I’m sure it’s really difficult having a family member so far away, and I know your mom must appreciate the unexpected visit so much. I am horrible at keeping secrets, but I did manage to keep my sister’s impending proposal from her for a few days. That was fun!

A recent surprise I pulled off was to have my new husband’s female friend who is in the Air Force and just moved across the country, show up for our wedding 3 weeks ago to surprise him. She had told him and the best man that she was going to be in survival school in the middle of the wilderness and unable to make our wedding. Turns out she was finishing up the training the day before the wedding, so she contacted me and we decided to keep it a secret from the guys. We decided it might be best to have her surprise them the night before, rather than at the ceremony site the day of. I ended up getting him to the best man’s house after they’d wrapped up his bachelor party the night before the wedding (he was pretty inebriated so that was interesting.) Then she initiated a Facetime call with him (while standing outside) and he didn’t even notice as the door started to open and there she stood in her fatigues and all. It was a neat moment.

Haha, such a sweet surprise. Those moments are the best. I went to college in California, and surprised my whole family back home (Germany) when I showed up for my grandma’s 80th birthday party. The only person who was in on it was my brother – he had told everyone he needed an extra seat at the dinner table because he was bringing his new girl-fried, and my parents and grandma almost passed out when they saw me. It was super sweet…

Awwww….I LOVE surprises!!! Good job girls! I still call my Mom “Momma”, too!

I threw a surprise graduation party for Patrick once and it was so stressful and difficult to pull off I might not ever throw a surprise party every again!!!

This is so freaking cute! I love it! I should try to surprise my mom sometime – not as far as Hawaii, but I think she’d still like it!
