Just a Colorado Gal

The Best Surprise

Y’all, I need to brag: my sis and I pulled off an epic surprise yesterday!

A few months ago, my sister (who lives in Honolulu) emailed and told me that she was thinking of planning a visit back home. She had just accepted a new position and had a week-long break between her old and new job, so why not fly back to Colorado so we could all go shopping for her wedding dress together?

Obviously, I thought this sounded like a perfect plan, but here’s the catch: we decided to keep it a secret from my mom! Originally, my dad was included in the veil of secrecy, but for various reasons, we had to fill him in on the details.

One of my favorite photos of Miss and me. Yes, we bring our own Guitar Hero wherever we go!

Seriously, this surprise was flipping awesome but semi-difficult to pull off! My mom had been bugging my dad about going to their cabin on the Western slope and she kept telling him that she wanted to go over there this week. I knew I had to come up with a decent reason to make her stay in the city, and it needed to be something that she couldn’t cancel. So, I completely lied and told her we had a post-Venus de Miles appreciation luncheon to go to. I have absolutely no idea where the lie came from but it was perfect! She totally believed me and I knew she couldn’t bail, even if she wanted to—she would never do that to her daughter!

So, after confirming with Mom that I would pick her up at 1:30 for the lunch, I headed to the airport to grab my sister!

Y’all, the look of surprise on my mom’s face was absolutely priceless! Missy (my sis) and my dad chatted on the driveway for a few minutes while I walked inside the house, ready to “pick my mom up.” She was still getting ready for our supposed lunch, and she looked down the stairs at me and made a smart-ass comment about how I was still in my workout clothes from CrossFit! I totally had to bite my tongue but it made me laugh so hard. She honestly thought I’d go to a sponsor lunch wearing filthy capris and a workout tank!

When my sis walked in and yelled, “Hey Mom!”, I honestly thought Mama’s eyes would pop out of her head! She did the cliché open-and-shut her eyes a few times, almost as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing…before bursting into tears. TOTALLY WORTH IT! I know it gets hard on both of my parents having their daughter so far away. I mean, it’s not like you can just hop in your car and drive to Hawaii, so my parents and I both miss my sister incredibly.

And did I mention how excited I am to help her choose her wedding dress??!!
