Bienvenido al Ano Nuevo!

Happy New Year! I seriously can’t believe that it is already 2009. Time flies the older you get (and I hate that I said that cause I feel like an old person now) but it’s true! I was talking to Angel the other day and we realized that our ten year high school reunion will probably be next summer. Yes, not that old compared to some people, I know, but thats a big deal to me! At any rate, Brandon and I went over to my sister and Bennett’s house along with Angel and Adrian and Frannie and Jesse for the big NYE celebration. It was a pretty mellow night but we all had a great time. The boys thoroughly enjoyed drunken Wii sports, and the girls didn’t care as long as the drinks kept coming and we got to see the ball drop at midnight. To top it off, Angel and I (per my mom’s instructions) even ran around outside banging on pots and pans, just to let EVERYONE know that 2009 had begun! Yes, we are that cool!

So I’m making a commitment, folks, and I am putting it on this blog so everyone (and anyone who actually reads this) can see and hold me to it. I have wanted to to run a marathon or half marathon for a really long time. I have started training for a half at least a handful of times and even worked up to the point where I could run 7 or 8 miles–which, for me, is a lot! I actually even signed up for the Horsetooth a few years back but still……I haven’t run a single race! I hurt my knee before Horsetooth and ended up in physical therapy strengthening my quads instead of racing. And this summer, when I put the most training in, I went to register for the Steamboat race and it was already full. So, FINALLY, I am determined to run a damn race!

I’m still pretty convinced that I am going to like my triathlons better and I plan to get at least one or two of those in this summer as well. But I want to give a long-distance race a try so I am gonna head back up to the beautiful mountains in June to run the half marathon in Steamboat. So hold me to it!

On the downside of my future running career…I got stuck running on a treadmill today! BLAH! I despise running on treadmills and it literally takes every ounce of my willpower to keep myself on there. Wo be the poor soul who is stuck next to me at the gym while I try to bang out a few miles—extra sympathy goes to you if you are a friend. I will tap, poke, bug, talk to, and generally annoy you for the entire time I am trying to run. I just don’t have any patience for treadmills and will do absolutely anything to distract myself! Unfortunately, I also have fairly bad asthma and the cold weather irritates the hell out of my lungs. So, when the weather gets cold, my cardio workouts go inside and poor Tally gets stuck with the dog park instead of nice long runs. And that is exactly what happened today, and let me tell you–it was excruciating to run for a measly 40 minutes on there! I watched some stupid Disney movie on the TV in front of me, I watched the new guy get elected to the Senate, I even watched some football game. When I got bored watching that, I started watching the girl’s screen on the treadmill next to me. I counted her calories burned, her average pace, I even started comparing her speed to mine with how fast each of our legs were moving! (I’m sure I was freaking her out!) Luckily, I had hit forty minutes and got out of there before she punched me in the face. I’m pretty sure I deserved it. Keep your fingers crossed that we keep a few warm days each week so I’m not subjected to a gym floor brawl!
