Cindy, Peter and Craig at the beginning of the hike
You see, ever since we have started receiving snow, I have been dying to head up to the mountains to play in the fluffy whiteness. We’ve had a few storms in the city, but because it’s Colorado and we get a zillion days of sunshine, the sun always comes out and melts the snow away. Sigh. However, I knew if we got up high enough, there would be plenty of the good stuff!
Craig, Cindy, Peter, and I headed up to the Butler Gulch Trail by Henderson Mine on Berthoud Pass. On a good day, you can cap off this 5 mile/2000 feet gain (RT) hike by locating the mine at the very tip top. There’s also this bizarre grave next to the mine, but we didn’t make it that far. We all brought our snowshoes with us but we realized at the trailhead that the trail was packed down and they were more than likely unnecessary. And, for the majority of the hike, that was true…until we got above tree line!

Cindy and me on the trail
The trail largely follows an old logging road that is semi-boring in the summer. Typically, I dislike logging road trails because I think they’re too well-traveled and kinda mundane. However, in the winter when they’re snow-covered, my opinion changes. The trail was virtually empty (we saw only 4 other people the entire day) and the addition of snow always makes a simple hike a bit more tricky. Because we had chosen to leave our snowshoes in the car, we really had to dig our toes into the snow in order to ensure we didn’t fall flat on our faces. And no, none of us were smart enough to bring Yak-Trax. You’d think this was my first time ’round this block!

Stunning view!
Β Once we hit tree line, the weather completely changed and I am excited to say that we found legit snow! The wind started gusting, the temps dropped (I’m guessing it was roughly 20-22 degrees), and all tracks to follow had disappeared. Craig and Peter went ahead to post hole the route for us, but it truly didn’t help Cindy and me out too much! Their legs are so much longer that neither of us could reach their footsteps in the snow. As a result, the gals had to track out our own path. Sigh. Super smart decision to leave the snowshoes at the car, no?! π

The best part? The view was stunning! We were at roughly 12,000 feet so we were above all the trees, and the surrounding peaks were capped with untouched snow. Although the wind was howling, there could not have been a better view. Tals even sat down to soak it up, too!

I want to come visit to go hiking! I haven’t seen snow in … 10 years? I think it’s time I rectify that π
Commmme visit! I’ll show you some good spots π
kinda jealous you have snow. we have miserable rain! looks like a great hike!
I can’t get over the amount of snow. That’s just crazy!
Fun!!! Crazy that it’s already that time of year. I bet you’ll be super cozy warm this year will all the gear you have constantly arriving at your door step!
Ha fact! I tried out a new baselayer top and a down jacket that Columbia sent me last week and I was HOT! I’ll probably review the coat in a few weeks but the stuff is LEGIT.
Fun! We did the same on both Saturday and Sunday. We snow hiked the mountains around Laramie. I took my Mom with me yesterday. She loved it. Of course Mikaya loves bounding through the snow.
Glad you got a change to get out and enjoy the fresh air too!
Change….or chance. Don’t mind me π
Wow great pics…that looks like a wicked trail! Colorado and Washington state have some similarities…well not currently considering there is not snow here!
I love fall and winter so I dont mind hiking in the snow, too much time spent in alaska I guess lol
Ha, I bet you can handle some SERIOUS cold! Remind me, how like did you live up there?
Cant wait for our days with the snow!!! Soon… We could get some with this storm coming through but Lake Ontario should keep us warm enough for only rain…..
Soon though!! Great pics!!!
WINTER IS COMING! (Haha, get it? Do you watch Game of Thrones?) Not sure if you’re in Sandy’s path but stay safe out there!
Gorgeous pictures! I like to snowshoe, but I haven’t done a lot of it, yet!
Aside from skiing, it’s my fave winter activity. It’s such a good cardio workout but it also kicks my ass (literally) and Tals loves it. Plus, I’ll use an excuse to get outside π
wow ! great scenery! I do a bit of snowboarding in the winter and last year i went snowshoeing for the first time and LOVED it so i think my bf and i are going to invest in snowshoes this winter!
Definitely do it– you won’t regret it!
WOW!! I love hiking and the snow is awesome! Great pictures!!
Okay, my weekend was fun- but WOW- this is amazing and beautiful!!!! Did you take the panoramic pic with your iPhone?
When I move out there, you need to teach me so many things. π
Nope, all the photos were actually taken with my camera. I’m realizing more and more that I suck at iPhone photography π
And yes, we will go play alllllllll the time once you move here!
Sounds beautiful but I have to admit I’ve never liked the snow. Of course, I’ve never done anything like a hike.
I went roller skating. About 28 miles on skates…fun and great workout. Also did Tunk or Treat at church. The kids were so cute!
Beautiful! We had snowshoes in our shed the whole time we lived in AZ. Now that we live in IL we are itching for it to snow so we can get the snowshoes out!
Looks like a gorgeous hike and I can’t believe you have snow!!! I love skiing – downhill and cross-country. I don’t think that I’ve ever really hiked in the snow though. Might have to try that next!
Yay for snow!!
I went glacier skiing this weekend and the snow was surprisingly great!
I usually prefer to spend snowy days on the couch with hot coffee but you make these crazy hikes look fun! You can’t beat the views either!
It has a great view. it looks like you choose a great place to hike. I really prefer the snow over the beach.
[…] I was hesitant to re-hike Butler Gulch this past weekend. It was almost a year to the day of the last time I hiked the trail with Cindy, Craig and Peter, and I was kind of wishing for a new route to […]
