Colorado Warrior Dash Recap

Happy Monday everyone!

I’m back from my self-imposed hiatus, and you know what? I finished my thesis! I am officially graduating! Feels like such a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders! We can chat more about that later though; instead, I want to share my recap of this year’s Warrior Dash with y’all!

Photo cred to Lena. Well, her camera anyway!

Last Sunday, Brandy, Lena, and I and headed up to Copper Mountain for Colorado’s 3rd annual Warrior Dash race! I had done the inaugural Colorado event in 2010, so I was curious to see how the course had changed over the past couple of seasons, and if it was still a fun event (spoiler: it was!)

The three of us got up there, and after a few confusing moments regarding Brandy’s lost registration, we managed to literally arrive at the starting line just as our heat began. We were in the back of the 500+ people in our wave, but I was cool with that. My knee is still a problem and I knew that some substantial walking would be happening.

Between 2010 and 2012, Colorado Warrior Dash has changed up a lot of the obstacles and they were a lot more fun this time around! We started things off with an elevated balance beam and a few rope descents. There were a lot of climbing walls of various heights, as well as some tiny tunnels that would make some claustrophobic peeps a little nervous! However, the highlight of any Warrior Dash has to be the mud pit at the end! During my first race in 2010, you may remember that quite a few people were seriously wrecking themselves in this mud pit— splitting their foreheads open, shredding their forearms, etc. WD must have noticed this because the mud pit was SO different this year! It was super deep and filled with liquid mud, almost so you had to swim through it. The girl in front of me was even kicking, like she was swimming, so I ended up with a mouth filled with mud. Yum! 🙂

But you know what else? Describing fun obstacle events like the Warrior Dash is near impossible, so I have found something even better! I wore my GoPro during the entire event and enlisted Brandy’s husband Scott to edit the footage for me. Scott is awesome with film editing, so his version is far better than mine ever could have been!

After the run, we went over to the Reebok Crossfit tent to speak with the reps and do a little crossfit workout! The super nice people at Reebok even had some new shoes waiting for all three of us, which was awesome because all of ours had gotten thrown in the donation pile after the run!

I had to modify the workout a bit to accommodate my knee, but it was still lots of fun. Actually, I am slightly embarrassed to admit that my hamstrings were slightly sore the next day! Goes to show how imbalanced my body was becoming with all running and nothing else! Meeting with the Reebok people also made me even more excited about my upcoming Crossfit trial (which we’ll have to chat about at some point!)

In short, it was a great day! Is the Warrior Dash the hardest event ever or super intense? Nope, not at all. But it was a great way to spend the day with friends, have a good time, play in the mud, drink a few beers, and enjoy the beautiful mountains that we have here in Colorado!

I was provided with registrations for Warrior Dash for my friend and myself. Opinions expressed are all my own!

Have you ever done a mud run or an obstacle run?
I’ve done Warrior Dash, Tough Mudder, the now defunct Bearable Adventure, and the Denver Oyster Race (just two days ago!)
How do you feel about obstacle/mud runs?
Love ’em. I think they’re a great way to get together with friends and have a good time. Plus, it’s easy to include friends of all athletic abilities. After all, we do this stuff because it’s fun, right?!
