Conquering the Climbing Rope

Happy Monday y’all!

Yes, I’m still in Haiti. And yes, I had SO much to share with y’all that I was able to write all of these posts before I left. For once in my life, I WAS ORGANIZED.

But I’ve got nothing for tomorrow.

Moving on!

Last Friday, I conquered a beast that has been sitting on my shoulder ever since the fifth grade: the climbing rope!

This was my half-assed smile. I sometimes feel so lame taking self photos. Kills me.

I geared up in one of my favorite Reebok tops that the company gave me during our visit in November. It’s the Crossfit Race Long Bra Top and I really love it. The racer back design has super skinny straps so I have lots of movement with my arms and back. Also, it has some comfy padding in the built-in bra so that I don’t have to wear a sports bra with it, which I totally love. I’m all about ditching the bra when possible!

Is that too much information?

Anyway, the warm-up of the day called for practicing our rope climbs. Although I knew I wouldn’t be doing the actual climbs for the workout, I really wanted to destroy that rope during the warm-up. After all, I haven’t been able to climb a rope since gym class in the fifth grade! We used to have them on field day too, and they were always a struggle. Everyone always told me that it was in the legs and I just needed to figure out my foot grip, but I could never get it!

Luckily for me, I was the only one at the gym during my workout so it was just me and TWO coaches! Both Adam and Brian spent some time explaining a couple of different methods for climbing a rope and honestly, I credit this one-on-one time to my eventual success.

Or maybe it is those little grippies on the side of my Nano’s. Those suckers definitely have some bite!

Regardless of the reason, I was able to make it to the top of the rope not once, not twice, but three times! I even did a bonus semi-fourth climb after the WOD just for Brian to take this photo.

Y’all, it felt good to accomplish something new, even when I’m still on the injured/worthless list. Totally made my day and gave me such a feeling of inner pride. It’s amazing what type of feelings can come from something as simple as a climbing rope!

PSA: Remember socks. I now understand the whole Crossfit craze of knee socks because that rope shredded my shins! Like, blood. And burning rawness in the shower. Does that mean I get street cred?

I was given the Nano shoes and the Long Bra Top by Reebok, free of charge. All opinions expressed are my own.

Awesome job!! Feels great to hit that accomplishment, huh?!

My latest accomplishment would be completing the Goofy Challenge. But that certainly did not involve a rope at any point!

Nice work!! I would need like 4 personal coaches to get me up a rope…I could never do it in elementary school, but perhaps now if I learned some skills I could!

Hope you’re having a wonderful time in Haiti!!

Love how strong you look on that rope. Great job conquering it. I could climb to the top back in sixth grade but I don’t think I have even tried since then.

Hope you are having a great time in Haiti, can’t wait to read all about it.

I love doing rope climbs at CrossFit because they make me feel like a total badass! I just got my nanos a few weeks ago and I am loving them.

I did my first rope climb last week! I definitely realized there are shoes that help more than my reeboks did! I need to get me a pair of the nanos!

Congrats on the rope climb!! That’s amazing. Thanks for the info about the bra top – I’d been wondering that!!

I haven’t done a rope climb in years … congrats! While not a crossfitter, my bro will attest to knee high socks when working out (he skinned many a shin deadlifting while competing in powerlifting in high school). I need to check the archives to see if you reviewed those nanos as I’m looking for a good cross training shoe!
