Y’all, the past week has been insane in preparation for this trip. You see, not only will I be in Haiti for the next week, but I come back for approximately 48 hours before heading to the Winter OR show in Salt Lake City and a media/blogger thing at Targhee in Wyoming. In short, I’m gone for the rest of the month and I’m trying my best to be prepared for that.
Unfortunately, I don’t do organization very well. Obviously.
Because of my scattered ways, I almost forgot to order my malaria meds last week. There are two different kinds– Malarone and Chloroquine– and I have taken both in the past. However, Malarone gives me night terrors so I would prefer to stick with Chloroquine. This pill is a weekly dose, which meant I needed to start it last week. You know, like two days after I got back from Park City. Luckily, I did some quick thinking and got the meds, but it was a close call!
I’m also currently (as in today) searching for a mosquito net. Apparently those things aren’t as easy to find as I originally thought, or at least not in Colorado. I suppose we don’t have too many of those blood suckers here, so maybe that’s why, but I’d really like to keep malaria at bay while in Haiti, so I’ll persevere!
All of that Heather-driven chaos aside, I am so excited for this trip! Angel and I catch an evening flight out tonight with a 10 hour “layover” in Newark. Our flight then flies direct from Newark to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, in the morning. In order to arrive in the DR at the same time as everyone flying from Chicago, we had to leave a day earlier. We could have taken a red-eye flight tonight with less of a layover, but that would’ve made us both exhausted and weird. We both figure that a 10-hour layover is enough to grab a hotel and catch a few hours of sleep. Better than nothing!
Y’all, I also want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who mailed me shoes! Over the past few weeks, I have received a flood of support in the form of footwear, and I couldn’t be happier about it. I even had to steal one of Will’s massive duffel bags to transport all the shoes down there! I know the men, women, and kiddos who receive all of these will enormously appreciate them. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
