Did My Feet Grow?

As promised, I headed to Road Runner Sports yesterday and snagged these beautiful, beautiful pieces of foot artwork:

Isn’t the pink even more stunning in real life? I like to think so 🙂

Anyway, while at RRSports, I made a discovery: my feet are officially larger!

Awhile back, Mizuno contacted me with their Mezamashii Project and offered to send me a pair of shoes. As I’ve previously mentioned, I chose the Ascend 7 trail shoes in a size 8 and they sent them to me. However, when the shoes arrived, I realized a size 8 was too small and had to exchange them for an 8.5. I have never worn Mizuno before, so I just wrote it off as a Mizuno thing.

Then, last week, I received a pair of the Reebok SmoothFlex Run shoes in the mail (we’ll talk about these at a later date!) As per usual, I asked for them in a size 8.

Pretty sweet colors, no?

Although the size 8 isn’t completely too small, it is a bit snug and I’ll be requesting an 8.5 in the future. Strike two for my previously “small” feet.

Finally, yesterday when I went to RRSports, I asked the sales lady for a size 8 in the neon pink Pure Cadence. My previous Pure Cadence were size 8, so I almost considered not trying them on because I was running so late. Good thing I did because the size 8’s were way too small! They were short and snug around my feet; not at all like my previous pair!

Luckily, they also had an 8.5 in stock and those fit great, so I purchased those. But after three pairs of shoes in a row, one of which is the exact same shoe I’ve been wearing for months, I’ve finally had to acknowledge the fact that my feet are bigger!

********************

So here is my question to y’all: when you train for longer distance runs (for me this is 13.1 or further, but whatever works for you!), did your feet get bigger? Is that possible because of swelling or something?

If that isn’t the reason, has anyone else ever had their feet abruptly get bigger? Or is this just another one of those “Heather issues”?!

I have heard that when you run longer distances, that your feet can swell, so you want to make sure your shoes aren’t too “snug.” I love those pink shoes. I got a pair of black shoes a couple months ago, and they seem so boring compared to the pink ones!

My feet definitely grew during my 13.1 – my usually well-fitting shoes almost made me lose a toenail!

I once read that if you’re transitioning to more “minimalist” shoes, your feet can increase by a half size or more – something to do with strengthening the muscles in your feet and allowing them to spread naturally? I could be very wrong but it’s ringing bells! Anyway, I’ve always been a 6.5, I was up to a 7 in NB Minimus and now a 7.5 in my Kinvaras!

In the past 3 years, I’d say my feed shrunk a half-to-a-whole size, and then just very recently went up a half again. Who knows!

First of all I LOVE the pink. As for the size I have no idea. I do know it can happen when you’re pregnant so I wouldn’t be surprised if it were to happen due to running. Interesting.

    LOVE the pink!!
and ummmmmm sadly my feet grew even when I wasn’t running!
and it wasn’t swelling or weight gain…
    they grew longer!
I too went from an 8 to 8.5!!!

Yup, my feet have grown for sure since I started to train for marathons. According to one of the running store managers, that’s pretty typical. I love the pink cadences! So pretty!

did you try them all on later in the day? Maybe your feet were a bit swollen from being on them all day? Just a thought. Mizunos I always have to go up a half-size larger than my normal running shoe, they just runner smaller I guess!

Those pink shoes are CUTE 🙂 love them!!

Mine grew from pregnancy, but not since (as far as I know). But now I am wondering if I should get a bigger size for my Pure Cadence. Hmmm….

I sure hope my feet don’t grow… I wear a giant size 10 as it is! Lol!

I think they do! I’ve always worn a 5 in street shoes, 6 in running shoes (baby feet, I know. I HATE it!) and after a year or so of running, I discovered my (once fine) toes were hitting the front of my shoes when I ran. Now I run in a 6.5 and it’s much, much better.

I love my Pure Cadences as well! I just went on a 5 mile run in SW London in the teal colored ones. Can’t get a new pair of the sweet sweet summer pink until these ones wear out unfortunately. They’ll be taking me through 4 more weeks of Europe travels, so they should be at least 1/2 done by the time I get back to California!

Great question – my feet are a little bigger in the summer due to heat, swelling, etc.

But something to note about the Brooks Pure shoes specifically – they are running 1/4 – 1/2 size small on everyone. It’s just the way the shoes were made/manufatured. Hope that’s helpful 🙂

Glad you LOVE the hot pink Cadence – one of my fave colors we made!

I used to wear a 7.5, now I’m an 8! I thought I needed to take it up to an 8.5, then came to the conclusion my feet have their own muffin top. 😉
An 8 wide did it for me and now it’s just the waiting game for the rest of my toenails to grow back.

I buy a half size larger shoe strictly for my long runs-anything over about 12, maybe 15 miles, because my feet swell on long runs and I have had issues with blisters. So, I always have a long run pair and a short run pair. High maintenance, I know.

I know that since I’ve transitioned to minimalist my feet have definitely spread. So now I feel more comfortable in half a size up! I think the wider toe box of many minimalist shoes allow the feet to spread naturally. My husband teases me and says I have Hawaiian feet now! When we were in Hawaii recently I was checking out our friends feet and sure enough, they are very wide and their toes have space between them from all the barefoot and slipper (aka flip flops) walking! I take it as a compliment 😉 So… maybe your feet have spread, too?

My feet are just dumb in general. I wear a size 8-8.5 in dress shoes or heels but 10.5 in running shoes. Go figure on that one. And my hiking shoes are smaller…well, they were but then I hated them and returned them, so I’m not sure how legit that is.

Enjoy your pretty new shoes! 🙂

    I’m usually a 9.5 and I had to order a 10.5 (!!!) in the Mizunos!!!

My feet have totally grown. I used to be an 8 and now wear a 9 most of the time. It’s crazy! But I feel like for me, much of that happened after pregnancy – guess that makes your arch collapse LOL. However, I do think – feet growing or not – Mizunos run a bit small. PS I love those pink shoes!

My feet have grown.. it seemed like it happened over night. my pure connects fit fantastic one day, took 2 days off running.. next time i put them on they suddenly felt like they were trying to EAT my feet. hurt so bad stuffing my feet in them. didnt make any sense. my good friend at the local running store out here says its totally common though… The more we run we change the way our feet work. The muscles in them, they arch can even change drastically over time! my wallet doesn’t approve of my feet changing

I used to wear a 9 or 9.5 and now I regularly buy 10.5. I exacerbated a lot of foot problems by cramming into what I thought was my size. I also have low volume/high arch which can be odd to fit also.

Apparently its relatively normal for your feet to expand a bit throughout adulthood. Something about the tendons relaxing or bones spreading out, I’m not sure. I’m much more careful about fit now, but it still seems like every other pair sits on the shelf ’cause it isn’t quite right, then I wear the good ones out way too fast.
