Dirty 30 Recap!

Why do people call your 30th birthday “dirty 30?” Does anyone know? It makes it sound….gross or something!

Anyway, this might be a slightly longer post than normal, but since I’m sure you don’t want to read through two days worth of birthday-related posts, this will have to do! Besides, let me just tell you that my birthday was awesome!

Thursday dawned bright and early and my parents, sis, and I headed to the North Shore of Oahu to enjoy our last day in Hawaii. We went to one of the beaches where they were setting up for a pipe competition the following weekend. The weather was super windy and the waves were massive, so I didn’t play in the water, but I did enjoy watching all of the badass surfers. I mean, check these guys out!

I got to wear my new Oakley running sunglasses that my sis gave me as a birthday gift. I have a pair of Armani shades that I love, but they’re more fashion than fitness, so I really needed a new pair. Love the pair that Missy got me!!!

We also enjoyed a tasty lunch of shrimp from Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. Apparently this truck is crazy well known or something and while it was tasty, I didn’t think it was best best shrimp ever. I rate it a 7/10 shrimps!

We headed back to Honolulu to pack and prepare for our red eye flight that night, but of course, we had to go out to dinner for a birthday celebration! We went to Keo’s, a ridiculously yummy Thai restaurant that we continually heard good things about. I ordered the green seafood curry and it was SO GOOD! I really enjoy Thai food but haven’t experienced anything near what I ate over in Thailand. This was the first time that the curry was actually comparable to the real thing!!

Mom, Dad, me, Missy, and Sang

We’re gonna skip over some bad things here: Honolulu making me check my carry-on bag by threatening me and then proceeding to lose it so that it wasn’t there in Denver when I arrived. They did manage to deliver it to my parents’ house on Saturday morning, though…. at 2:45am. Again, not dwelling on the negative!

My best friend Angel arranged a surprise dinner for me on Friday night, so although I was incredibly exhausted when we arrived in Denver from not sleeping on any of the plane rides, I took a two-hour nap and rallied to head out for more celebrating! She picked me up and took me to Sushi Hai, an awesome sushi restaurant in Denver. I’ve eaten here quite a few times, and it is always so good! I was super happy to see Angel, Cindy, Craig, Tim, and my parents there when I arrived. It was a small group, but it was a perfect way to spend the evening 🙂

Angel, Cindy, and Craig. And yes, Cindy has cake on her fingers 🙂

Even better? My friends weren’t done celebrating my entrance into old age! In addition to the dinner fun on Friday, I got up early on Saturday and met Cindy and Angel for a girls’ day! It started at Root Down for brunch and bottomless mimosas. This alone was amazing because Root Down is one of my fav restaurants, but it is so hard to get into without reservations! The owners converted an old gas station into an organic and locally-grown restaurant, and the menu is unbelievable. The 5 glasses of blood orange mimosa went down pretty okay too 🙂

And look what they got me for a gift: new snowshoes! (For those of you that have followed my blog for awhile, you know this was a much-needed gift!)

After the fantastic food, I was feeling full and happy; the perfect combo! We then headed over to The Sweet Life nail bar and lounge. The girls had scheduled us in for Essential Plus Spa Pedicures, complete with cranberry mimosas. Can you say heaven?! With my lack of sleep, full stomach, multiple glasses of mimosas, and hot paraffin wax on my feet, I’m pretty sure I almost fell asleep in my chair!

Almost, but not quite! The day wasn’t over just yet! This may be lame to some, but H&M just recently came to Colorado and the three of has had yet to check it out. Besides, what is a gals day without a little shopping?! We headed back into downtown and somehow managed to find a parking spot. Of course, I got easily distracted when a totally random protest interrupted us by walking down the middle of the 16th Street Mall!

What?! The kicker was that I couldn’t even figure out what they were protesting, and I’m positive that it isn’t because of the champagne! I saw a sign for something about water, another sign in Spanish about land and life, and a third man gave me a pamphlet on the Occupy movement. I think a bunch of happy campers just got together and decided to cause a ruckus!

Cindy, Angel, and I had a freaking field day in H&M and I managed to acquire a few new things. I found a really cute dress that I wanted, but have absolutely no need for. If I were to work in an office or something, it would be perfect, but my landscaping wardrobe doesn’t typically require pencil skirts! However, I liked the dress so much that I bought it anyway. I am thinking maybe I can wear it to a wedding that I have coming up in May….what do you think? Will this work for a wedding?

Dress by H&M

Gotta love the self timer. I feel like such a dork! But, then I took another pic that was much more me:

Dress by H&M. Ridiculous pose by me

And yes, I wear my hair in a ponytail A LOT.

I was thinking of maybe swapping the belt out for a red one so I could wear red heels with it, too. That would be fun, right? (And seriously, these are real questions! I’m fashion challenged!)

After all that fun and revelry, I crashed hard. I woke up on Sunday with plans to get some homework done along with  6-mile run. Yeah, that didn’t happen. I was just so tired and my apartment was a wreck! Oh well–here’s to hoping that 6 miles happens today!

Thank you to all of my friends and family who made my 30th so incredibly special!!

What do you think about the dress: will it work for a wedding or is it too office-like?

If you’re female, how do you feel about pedicures?
I love them, but Cindy hates being touched! She hates pedicures and massages, and only did it because it was my birthday. What a good friend 🙂

I feel ya! I love getting pedicures and go A LOT in the summer…but between rock climbing, landscaping, and being a chronic nail biter, I would never even think of getting a manicure!

Sounds like lots of fun. Love that dress. I think it would look really cute with a red belt and red shoes.

HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! It looks like you had so much fun. The dress is super cute and could easily work for a wedding, it’s all about the accessories. Clutch+shall+strappy heels= perfect for wedding!

I love getting pedicures but feel bad for the people having to give them to me since my feet are SO terrible!

    • Reply Heather @ Just a Colorado Gal at

I always think the same thing, especially when I go by myself. My feet are always a nightmare so I’m usually somewhat embarrassed 🙂

Happy Birthday!!! It sounds like you had a total blast…which you should!!

Love that dress…H&M is the devil and the most amazing thing ever all rolled into one…way too much money spent there!

  • Reply Christi at

I love the dress and you should wear it to the wedding. I think the red belt with red heels would look great also!

    Happy Birthday again!

Wow what a great celebration! Happy 30th!

  • Reply Janetha @ meals + moves at

Oh and I LOVE that dress!!

  • Reply Neon Blonde Runner at

You look fab in that dress!! I think the red would totally be fun too (not that I know anything about fashion…), I say the brighter, the better haha!

I cannot believe the airline people threatened that your luggage would get “lost” if you didn’t check it. Sounds like they were super rude.

And PS your family is just TOO cute!

      Thanks, friend!

Oh, and you better believe I wrote a nice “letter” to United yesterday. I’m still so irritated that I might even post about it in more detail just to vent 🙂

The dress is gorgeous and would be great for a May wedding. I like the idea of switching out the belt for a red one so you can wear red shoes!

So glad your birthday celebrations were so much fun! Sounds like it couldn’t have been more perfect!

  • Reply Lauren at

I love the dress too! Wear it!
When I turned 30, I called it FLIRTY 30. 😉 Your bday looked awesome! And I’m so glad you got your bag- ours got lost on our honeymoon (on our flight out) but luckily turned up a day later. I thought I was going to throw up the whole time waiting for them!
ROOT DOWN is amazing! My cousin took me there when I visited Denver for the first time back in 2009 and it still goes down as one of the best meals I have ever had! I should probably book a reservation NOW for when I visit Colorado in May!
Oh hey- I have a bunion too. I just put up a photo of my bunion-y feet the other day (but I was trying to hide it…)

    • Reply Heather @ Just a Colorado Gal at

Bunions are a pain, aren’t they?? My mom just had surgery on hers and I’ll probably do the same within a few years, but I’m gonna wait until they really hurt. I can’t stand the thought of being incapacitated for so long!!

I have never heard the phrase “dirty 30” and my age group is all approaching it or there so you would think I’d come across it now and again. Hmm. Also LOVE LOVE LOVE that dress. it’s be great for a wedding (IMO)

Happy 30th, Heather! I’m so glad you had such a thorough celebration. I hope my 40th next year is that much fun!

  • Reply Teamarcia at

I’ve never heard of dirty 30 either! But happy birthday nevertheless–can’t imagine many more perfect ways to spend it than in Hawaii. I think that dress is fine for a wedding. 🙂

I’ve never heard of “dirty 30″…it rhymes nicely but makes me think of sketchy things! Sounds like a freaking amazing birthday! I’ve only had my toes done once – in Guam and it tickled. I used to have my finger nails done all the time, I try not to think about how much money I blew!

Love the dress – my limited fashion sense says a red belt and red shoes would go great! 🙂

  • Reply Julia at

happy belated birthday!!! it looks like it was fantastic! love the snowshoes! they look awesome. and that dress + those shoes = tooooo cute!

  • Reply Lena @Fit on the Rocks at

I love the Sweet Life Nail Bar! There’s where I got my gelish manicure done 😀 It sounds like you had a fabulous beginning to your 30s. You can definitely wear that to a wedding if you dress it up with some jewelry and have some snazzy hair.

  • Reply Jill at

That dress is really cute and looks adorable on you! I am jealous you went to H&M, I heard they have some great deals (been to the one in Boston when I was there for the marathon but didn’t stay more than a few minutes 🙁 ). I was trying to get my daughter to go last Friday when she was off work but she said she didn’t want to go downtown (she lives in Capital Hill…which is practically downtown. Lame girl! Ha). Anyway, sounds like a fantastic birthday – you have some really fun friends! 🙂

  • Reply Kara at

That dress is adorable! Maybe it’s a good date night outfit. 😉

  • Reply Alyssa at

Your friends are awesome! I love the dress – it could totally work for a wedding, and I think the red would be cute (full disclosure – I’m fashion challenged). I love pedicures, but I rarely get them unless I’m going to a wedding or something – I always feel guilty spending the money.

What a great birthday! I’m glad you were able to enjoy so many fun times!

I love the last photo. Happy Birthday and please know you look fab. Cute, cute outfit.

Looks like you had such a great weekend! Happy birthday!
Also, as a girly girl, a skinny red belt, a pumps, and a red clutch would look killer with that dress. A good dress is never a bad decision!

What a fun birthday!! And some great friends you’ve got – sushi, Root Down/Mimosas, snowshoes, pedicure + shopping?! That’s an amazing day 🙂

Glad you had such a great beginning to your new year! Next time I see ya, bday drinks are on me 🙂

    • Reply lgsmash.com at

Also – that dress is completely appropriate for a wedding! It’s super cute!

  • Reply mymarblerye at

SOOOOooo…I almost got that dress at H&M and I also have bunions! Glad you had a great bday! From the trip to getting spoiled back home, sounds like you had a great year!

  • Reply LiveLoveDIY at

Love that dress!! And this post! So cute!

  • Reply Jennifer L at

I think that dress would work for a wedding. If you swap out the belt for red and match the shoes… beware that you will will be channeling the American flag. You can wear the red shoes with a blue belt as well though, you don’t have to match your shoes to anything you’re wearing, so long as the colors don’t clash.

Pedicures.. I’ve never had one. My feet are super ticklish… plus something about someone else touching my feet bothers me… I do love painted toenails though, so I do it myself 🙂

    • Reply Heather @ Just a Colorado Gal at

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh good point. I don’t want to be the woman at the wedding wearing a flag dress 🙂 Maybe I’ll just find some similar cute heels that I can actually walk in — I love the heels in this pic but they are so damn high that I’m rendered useless after an hour 🙂
