I conquered the DIY holiday wreath!
Remember how I said on Monday that I had attempted a crafty DIY holiday craft project and failed miserably? If you don’t remember, just check out this photo. Sure, the ornaments are sparkly…but what is it?!
A holiday blob, that’s what.
Needless to say, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to tackle the project again. I had been gung-ho about making the wreath when I read Virginia’s blog post on the topic, but after bombing out on the first go round, I kinda lost my enthusiasm. Does that ever happen to you? Attempting the wreath again just seemed…less appealing.
However, I’m one of the biggest Christmas junkies on the planet. I love the season and live for the decorations, even though I refuse to put anything up until after Thanksgiving. But, if I can’t decorate the house (even if it is just on principle), I can still fulfill my Christmas urges by making something, right?
Thus, the second wreath attempt was born!
Like Virginia suggested in her post, I scoured the local Dollar Store for cheap ornaments. They had a lot, but only in one size, so I finally had to venture to Hobby Lobby. Luckily, all of their Christmas stuff was 40% off so I was able to score all of the ornaments for like $25. Yes, it was significantly more than the talented Virginia spent (my Dollar Store didn’t have a large enough wreath form either), but what can I say….I was obsessed with the project at this point and probably would have spent hundreds just so I could try again!
At first, I was a bit nervous about using a wooden wreath. The one I purchased was a 28” frame of wooden vines, so I was kinda concerned that the extra sticks would poke out the sides or shift. However, it ended up not being a problem as I started to glue ornaments to the inside.
Virginia originally suggested lining the outside of the wreath with ornaments next, but in true fashion, I got bored and just decided to dive on in. I wanted to play with different ornaments! I hot glued my four large red ornaments in random spots around the wreath, and just went from there.
My favorites? Those tiny little textured silver ornaments! Those little ones were so handy to cover up excess glue spots or fill in tiny gaps, and I really feel like they pulled the whole project together. It’s going to look so pretty above our fireplace!
Honestly, I am pretty proud of this sucker and had a ton of fun making it! Will came home from work to a living room floor covered in excess glitter and a girlfriend with hot glue all over her fingers, so I’d call that a successful day. In fact, both of us like the wreath so much that I think I’m going to make a second smaller one for our front door!
