Dog Days of Summer

I’ve always wondered where that phrase came from. I mean, seriously: I have a dog and she certainly does not enjoy the 100-degree temps we have going on here in Colorado. In fact, these are most definitely NOT her ideal days…so why do they belong to her?! (I just googled it: I guess the ancient god, Sirius, who was also known as the Dog Star, was in charge of the hot weather. That explains that!)

But I digress…

As the summer heat settles in, I’ve become more and more settled into a routine. I’m not training for any races currently, I took the semester off from grad school, and this is the only time of year when work is very mellow and stress-free. In fact, this is the one time every year when I can just… relax. Crazy!

Because of my newfound free time, I’ve been able to catch up on various odds and ends. As of late, the best “catch up” that I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy was with an old friend. He and I had a bad ending to our relationship (no other details needed) and we hadn’t really gotten the chance to speak for the past year. We went to dinner last night at one of my fave bars in Denver (My Brother’s Bar) and just talked. We chatted about everything that’s happened in the past year, where we are, how others are doing, etc. You know, the usual catch up. And it was so good to see him. I missed that face 🙂

And for those of you that somehow haven’t been to My Brother’s Bar….check it out. It’s the oldest still-working bar in Denver that also happens to have spectacular hamburgers (if you’re into that kind of thing. Typically, I’m not but I definitely made an exception!) Aside from the good food and relaxed, no-name on the building-type environment, my favorite part about this place is the history. If you’ve ever read On the Road by Jack Kerouac, you will definitely know the character of Dean Moriarty. The real life Dean was a man named Neal Cassady who completely epitomized the “Beat Generation.” Without going into a million more details, both Kerouac and Cassady used to hang out at My Brother’s Bar, and I even think one tended the bar. Very cool.

(See how I jumped to an entirely non-relevant sidenote? I can’t imagine how my friends feel in coversations with me!)

My other favorite part to these dog days is all of the wonderful weddings that have already passed or are approaching in the near future. There has already been 3 thus far, but I have two left before early fall, and I am definitely happy about both of them. Both of them are friends from my Steamboat days. And I know it may seem strange since most people dislike going to weddings, but I am so happy for both of these couples that each wedding can only be fun! (Besides, one is in Stowe, Vermont during the fall leaf change–beautiful!)
