In fact, you know what? I meant to write this yesterday and then the whole day passed in a freaking blur. Is this what happens when you DON’T work?! Have I become one of those jobless people that complains about how their days are filled with too many fun things?!
Friday night was Will’s corporate party and naturally, we did it up in style! The big event was at the Grand Hyatt downtown, so another couple and us decided to rent out the executive suite upstairs for a little pre-and-post party gathering. I was a bit stressed and rushed for time to beat rush hour and get down there in time on Friday, but once we rolled into the room and saw the view, all the chaos melted away!
The actual work party was a lot of fun and we stayed downstairs till 1am, dancing and laughing while consuming a couple too many drinks. (Sidenote: Have y’all ever heard of a Poinsettia, as in a drink? I hadn’t but let me tell you—they’re tasty!)
To make a long story short, we ended up staying out til 4am on Saturday morning which is something I haven’t done in at least a decade. Seriously. I was so glad that Will had the foresight to rent the suite because I was so exhausted by the time we crawled into bed that I’m positive I never would have made it home.
Saturday continued to pass in a blur as we picked Tals up from my parents’ house and went to Big Horn CrossFit’s holiday party. I made these delightful chocolate mocha peppermint cupcakes that have become my favorite as of late. If you’re looking for a vat of chocolate heaven with just a bit of peppermint, definitely check out the recipe. I have yet to find anyone that doesn’t love them!
I would have loved to have slept through the remainder of the weekend, but of course, that wasn’t in the cards. We had a lineup of errands on Sunday morning followed by The Nutcracker ballet with my parents in the evening.
Y’all, my first Nutcracker was probably when I was four or five, so I have seen a number of shows. Honestly, I have never in my life experienced a crowd that was as rude as this one! Of course, the audience was filled with little kids since it was a holiday show, but their constant chatter didn’t bother me. After all, what makes the excitement and spirit of the holiday if not the little kiddos who still believe in the magic?
Instead, it was the flipping adults in the audience! First of all, at least 50% of our seating area arrived late to the performance which kinda sucks in itself. I could handle that though: sometimes parking is a mess and I can see where people would arrive late. However, the usher never closed the doors and continued to let everyone in to be seated throughout the entire first half. This meant we were constantly standing up to allow people to pass and blocking the view for everyone behind us. This literally went on for 30 minutes and it got to the point where I didn’t even know what was going on in the ballet….which says a lot considering I have the plot line memorized!
Even worse? The row of women next to us (who had arrived 25 minutes late) continued to talk and text message during the show. Another guy pulled out his phone to record the performance, and a woman in front of us kept getting up to go to the bathroom, completely oblivious to everyone behind her. I finally opened my big mouth during the second half when my irritation hit a boiling point. That same row of women next to us that had arrived late to the first half? They decided to take an extra long intermission by drinking wine in the lobby and didn’t feel like acknowledging the dimming lights and warning bell that signaled the start of the second act. Since we had the four seats near the aisle, we patiently stood until the usher asked us to be seated, hoping the women would return before the ballet began. Nope, instead they sauntered in 10 minutes into the second act, forcing everyone to stand up yet again so that they could get by, completely blocking the view for everyone. Argh.
(And not to mention—can you imagine how distracting this would be if you were a performer?!)
Regardless of my whining, the ballet was as beautiful as always. I’m always struck by the set that the Colorado Ballet puts together. Their construction and colors and costumes are so elaborate and colorful and always make me feel like I’m in the land of sugar plum fairies. Totally lame, I know, but it’s my favorite holiday tradition!
Last but not least? To top off an already-busy weekend, we now have this guy hanging out in our house:
My parents are spending the holidays with my sis in Hawaii so I’m dog sitting Tiger for a week or two. Little Man is all put out since he isn’t in HIS home, and I have totally forgotten how tricky it is to live with a puppy instead of a mature dog like Tally. He actually came running downstairs 5 minutes ago, happily showing me his new toy as it hung from his mouth: Will’s socks.
Uh oh.
