First Chair of the Season

Happy Friday y’all! Not gonna lie– that expression doesn’t mean a whole lot to me now that I’m not working 😉 I even got confused the other day and asked a friend why he was working so late on a Sunday night. He responded by kindly explaining that it was, in fact, a Tuesday. Oops. Tough life I lead.

Anyway, I took advantage of my three months of freedom by heading up the hill yesterday to catch my first day on the slopes! For those of y’all that live outside of Colorado, you may not realize that the Rockies have gotten hammered over the past week with snow. Naturally, everyone here was giddy with excitement because it was starting to look like another dry season, and no one wants a repeat of last year!

My new helmet and goggles, thanks to Will. You can’t see ’em, but the center of the flowers are skulls 🙂

It was the pull of the snow that got me up there, even though it was definitely a questionable maneuver in light of my recent back issues. I’m still banished to the elliptical (although I did get sassy and hopped on the stair master once this week!) but my doc said I could try skiing to see how it felt.

Long story short: it didn’t feel so hot.

I drove up with Heidi and her husband, Chris, and we oggled at the temps as we drove over Berthoud Pass. It was around 9am and I kinda grimaced when I read “10 degrees” on my Pathfinder’s thermometer. Naturally, that was the warm spot! The temps kept dropping the closer we got to Winter Park, and by the time we arrived at Mary Jane‘s parking lot, the car was reading a whopping -8 degrees outside. Yup, we were going to have some fun!

After a bit of a debacle with my right ski boot (can’t take me anywhere!), our bundled-up bodies headed over to the lift and headed up the mountain. Although it was– quite literally — frigid outside, the day was stunning. All the fresh snow was sparkly white and the sky was a bright blue, giving us that quintessential “bluebird day.” As per usual, the Mary Jane side of the mountain was less crowded than the Winter Park side, so the lines were minimal and the slopes were fairly open.

Unfortunately, it was definitely freezing and more importantly, my lower back was absolutely NOT having this day o’ fun. After a handful of runs, I realized that I needed to ease off and take a break. Once we all got inside and ate our lunch, I knew then that my back was all sorts of pissed at me. I called the day and sent Heidi and Chris back out for some more shredding while I sat in the lodge and enjoyed a rousing conversation with a 57-year-old woman who just purchased her first smart phone. I snapped a photo that she could send to her boyfriend, and we somehow continued on to a conversation about fracking and the environmental drawbacks. Only me y’all.

The lift back to the parking lot

Because of my tete-a-tete with the mountain yesterday, my back was all sorts of angry with me. Lame. Luckily, I am heading to my doc today for my second visit this week. I went on Tuesday and we both agreed that our previous course of treatment wasn’t working. Some of my mobility had returns but my extension was still non-existent and painful. He suggested non-surgical spinal decompression, and while it sounded absolutely terrifying, I agreed to give it a try (Don’t laugh, but I totally had a mental image of Braveheart when they pull Mel Gibson apart at the end!) We put it on the absolute lowest setting, just so we could see how it would work for me. Luckily, it gave me a few millimeters of extension back, so I think it could work! I’m excited to head in this morning for a more legit treatment…

….after all, I’m going to Park City next week and I NEED to ski when I’m there!

We’re already in the negatives here…I’m just looking outside and we have almost 15 cm of snow. We are looking at another 15 lol

That would make me so happy! They’re talking about it snowing on Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day here, and I am ecstatic!

AWWW jeeze. Thinking about you. I like in Canada is whatever, pretty much goes haha

In college I regularly dealt with temperatures in the negatives but now that I live below the Mason Dixon line I have become soft and wussy and probably couldn’t take it anymore! I went skiing once and fell and it really hurt and I’ve never been back, although I would totally go! It sounds like fun. Sorry your back said no 🙁

Glad you were able to get a few runs in. Looks like fun although I must admit I’m scared I’m going to freeze my ass off when we head to slc. :/

Nah, we’ll make sure you’re covered! I have tons of extra winter clothes that I’ll bring so you’ll be nice and bundled up!

Too cold for me! I hate to be cold. Need warm sun in my life!

It’s tough to say I have any “do not go out” in temps because with todays gear we can withstand so much more. I say layer up and enjoy the calm while everyone else stays inside!

    • Reply Colorado Gal at

Agreed! Although, remembering my neck warmer/face mask yesterday would’ve been key since my face was FREEZING!

i’m with eric! as long as you’ve got the right stuff, no temps are too cold! fortunately, alex spends a lot of time thinking about and buying us the right gear, rated for different temps.

bummer that your back is angry – hopefully it will calm back down before you head to SLC! are you skiing park city?

Oh man, so jealous you got to ride this week – darn work!! I will absolutely bundle up, leave no skin exposed, and ride through the elements. I’ve ridden in negative temps only once (in Whistler) and with good layering I didn’t really notice it. 🙂

Sorry to hear about your back-what a bummer. We are hitting up either A Basin or the backcountry tomorrow and temps will probably call the shots although it’s warming up already. I can handle negative temps-as long as their is no wind. If there wind, I wimp out. Thankfully being in the trees in the backcountry negates some of the wind. Hope you feel better.

Love the skeleton flower motif – need a pic! 🙂

I’ve become a wimp, -8 is too cold. Spring skiing is a lot more fun.

First of all, your pictures are stunning. When I saw them on instgram, I was very very jealous. I am itching to ski. I missed last season because of my knee and cannot wait to get back on the mountain. I can totally understand the pull and I’m sorry that your back acted up. I hope that the new treatment helps and that you definitely get to ski in Park City. Feel better and happy holidays!

It has only been in the upper 20s here so far, but I know it will get colder! I’m going to Maine this week for Christmas and I’m sure it will be cold there.

    Your photos are great!

You know…I’ve never been skiing or snow boarding. In fact, I’ve never even been to any kind of slopes. I’ve only seen them from the car window. And the best part, I live in MONTANA. That’s all there is to do 9 months out of the year 😉 Someday I’ll have to try it.

Your photos are beautiful! I lived in Steamboat for 5 years and cannot wait to go back for Christmas. These pictures really brought me back to my hometown and I will be ready to snowboard!

I have to disagree with some of the comments…No matter how much you bundle up, some temps are just too cold for me! For the last few days in Fairbanks (AK) we’ve have -45, and even cars don’t like that temp. Once this cold snap breaks -20 will feel good and a lot of us will be out while it’s “nice”. I did see one crazy person biking down the road today – I have know idea how they do that!
