Thermos recently released a brand-new product called the Connected Hydration Bottle with Smart Lid that aims to target this exact problem. On first glance, it’s a “normal” 24-ounce, BPA-free water bottle. But of course, that’s on first glance! Second {and third and fourth and fifth} glances will tell you a different story.
How does it work? The difference with the Connected Hydration Bottle with Smart Lid is in the cap. The “smart” sensor tube tracks your water consumption throughout the day via the free Thermos Smart Lid app on your phone. Download it, answer a couple basic questions {gender, weight, activity level, etc}, and the app will identify your target water consumption for the day.
The Bottle with Smart Lid stays connected to the app {or your FitBit} within a 75-foot range {And it stays charged for up to 12 days}. As you sip and refill your bottle throughout the day, the app will constantly update your progress.
It will also show you an overall progress chart of your hydration consumption during the day. For me, this has been helpful in forcing me to constantly sip rather than chug an entire bottle in one setting.
It it gimmicky? Possibly. But I can also see the appeal in the novelty of the item. I’ve only had a Bottle with Smart Lid for a week, and it’s almost become a game of sorts. I ran seven miles on Thanksgiving morning and per usual, found myself drinking far less water and way too much wine. But when I opened the app and saw how low I was on my percentage goal, I started drinking more water…..just to make my progress chart look better! {And yes, I realize that’s not WHY I should be drinking more water…but as long as I hit the target endpoint, who cares about my logic in getting there?!}
