Goals for the Colorado (Half) Marathon

Oh man, guys, this is good! So, I finally sat down yesterday and looked up my official past half marathon times and I am (ironically) please to report that they were slow!

Let me explain.

My first ever half in the whole wide world was the Steamboat Half Marathon in Steamboat Springs in 2009. I literally had no idea what I was doing and I think my longest training run may have been around 8-9ish miles. I can’t be sure because I did all of my training with the Nike+ app on my phone and I found out during the race that, although I had calibrated it, the accuracy was way off. When I finished the race, it told me that I had completed almost 16 miles…..yeah, not so much.

Even better? The temps pulled a random Colorado maneuver and plummeted right before the gun went off. A few miles in, the rain started to come down and I just remember freezing. In short, I was undertrained, freezing, and not having a lot of fun. I’m pretty sure I walked at least 4 miles during that race, so I was happy with my time of 2:45. Yes, that’s a 12:35 pace 🙂

My second half was the Platte River Half in Littleton in 2010. Again, I had used my Nike+ for training because I’m not entirely sure I knew that something like a Garmin existed! I did some serious calibration on the track during my early training runs, so I was positive that my longest training run had been 10 miles. Alas, I think that wasn’t true again because this time, my finishing distance, according to the app, was 15.62 miles. Sigh. So who knows how long my training runs really were, but I’m not sure they were long enough!

I managed to fall into step with two girls during this half that matched my pace perfectly. The three of us hung together for 10 miles and I remember seeing the 10 mile mark around 1:50. Not fast, but pretty decent for me. Unfortunately, they stopped to use a Portapotty, I kept going, and the wheels fell off!

I think my lack of training, again, annihilated me because those last three miles killed me and again, I walked a substantial portion. Around mile 12.1, my music cut out and I was so pissed and irritated that I swear, I almost threw my phone at a spectator 😉 The bright side was that the weather was beautiful, but that didn’t help my legs feel any more prepared. I finished that half in 2:35 with an 11:49 pace.

The point of my long winded ramblings of bad races past? I think I can do better this time around, and that makes me happy! I did my 10 miler on Sunday in 1:47, so unless I can’t cough out a 5k in 45 minutes, I’m looking at an automatic PR.

Is it a fast PR? Nope. But with life as crazy as it has been and my training derailing the way that it has, I will be super happy if I completely this half quicker than I have in the past. That’s improvement and regardless of how much faster it may or may not be, I’ll TAKE IT! 🙂

In case you were wondering, these are the shoes I decided to wear this Sunday:
Yup, my Pure Cadence. I might be hurting afterwards, but at least I’ll feel mentally fast!

What’s your #1 running goal in the whole world? It can be anything: certain race, certain time, etc.
Whatcha doing this weekend?!

I am doing a half marathon this weekend as well, you know, all us cool kids run half marathons this weekend.

Enjoy your reward for all your hard work

My friend recently did a half and asked me after “Do you think my chip time or my Nike ipod thingie (paraphrasing) is more accurate?”. I was like uhhh….maybe go with the chip time. I’m with you, looking at a more than likely PR is GREAT feeling! Hmmm….eventually I’d like to do a 100 miler, or run a really amazing race, like the Paris marathon. Good luck!

ah, those shoes are gorgeous (I’m a sucker for anything teal/aqua lol).

automatic PR? always an awesome thing. that’s why I’m stoked for running my first marathon this fall: instant PR for 26.2 by default haha.

I want to get into ultramarathons. Yup, haven’t even run farther than 13.1 and I already want to tackle super long races lol

Lincoln 1/2 Marathon this weekend!! My first half, so excited. Im pacing the 2:05 group…..I need someone to help me pace nice and easy to start and hopefully, I will have something left in my tank for the last few miles and I can pull away.

Best wishes! You’ll do great, and you’ve earned that beautiful PR…it’s just waiting for you to come and chase it down! Years ago I used the Nike+ and gave up on it after it was really off too. I would tell me my distance was always really really short, like a 9 miler would only clock as 4 miles. Maybe I just never understood how to calibrate it. Now I rarely use my garmin because it’s just as crazy and is often on the fritz, it’s very liberating to run technology free!

Fly like the wind this weekend!

I keep remind myself to not obsess about my clock, so I think I’m going to make a goal after this half to do at least one run per week sans Garmin, phone, clock, anything. You start to forget what that feels like!

You can do it for sure! My goal for my next half in a couple weeks was to break 2:10, but I just want to at least hit my last time of 2:15 at this point because training has not been going well. Good luck!!!

    Hey Heather…
You’re going to do great at the half, I’m so excited for you! Are you staying in Ft. Collins Sat. night? I’m at the Marriott I think. I have no plans to race this puppy, just going to go out slow and hope to hold on to a consistent pace (slow!). I’ll probably be wearing my dark green Boulder Running Race Team shirt and black shorts. Hope I’ll see you!! Looks like great weather and a downhill course…how much better can that be!?!?

    Good luck!

    • Reply Heather @ Just a Colorado Gal at

Yup, we’re heading up tonight also– I think we’re at some Best Western. I’ll probably be in a black Nike tank and some black running shorts. I’ll keep my eye out for you!!

  • Reply Beth at

GOOD LUCK, GOOD LUCK!!!! You will rock this race!!! I’m a new runner and simply working towards my first half, and want nothing more than to just be able to say I finished. 🙂

I’m interested in the outcome of the shoe decision re. the cadence (found this from facebook, I swear I’m not a stalker, just a minimalist shoe lover who has not worn the cadence yet). What did you think of them? Good for the distance, terrain?

  • Reply Heidi Nicole at

Good luck this weekend – I’m excited for you, you’re bound to PR!

    Right now I just want to survive Fargo…with a PR. Honestly, if I don’t PR I’ll cry. It won’t be a fast PR but I’ll be happy with any PR. {my first marathon sucked…a lot…}

Hope you are about to get a good night sleep. Good luck and run your butt off tomorrow!
