Once again, I’m out plugging something for a friend…only this time, its not just for a friend, but also for Mother Nature and the wonderful state of Colorado. My friend Tristan from up in Steamboat Springs is a finalist in this awesome contest sponsored by National Geographic. But rather than explain his plan myself, I’ll just copy his own words:
I am hoping that I can enlist your help in a project that I am working on here in Steamboat Springs, CO. Several months ago I entered a contest online which is being sponsored by Frito-Lay and National Geographic called The Green Effect. The essence of the contest is to empower regular people with small ideas to educate and inspire their communities about the environment and global warming. My idea was to start a community wide tree planting event to combat the Mountain Bark Beetle epidemic which has killed 1.5 million acres of lodge-pole pine trees in Colorado and Southern Wyoming. If i were to win, we would receive $20,000 to put toward buying tree saplings and organizing the event. I have been chosen as one of 10 finalists out of over 2,500 entries.
This is where you come in. Four of the winners will be chosen by judges, but the fifth winner will be chosen by a popular vote and I need all the help I can get. Please log on to greeneffect.com and vote for my video entitled Re-tree Colorado. You can vote once, per email adress, per day all the way up to the 21st of July. Please forward this message to anyone who might be interested and don’t forget to VOTE!
At any rate, Tristan is onto something, and for anyone who lives in Colorado, you know how devastating the beetle-kill has been. Sure, it is natural process, but there is nothing that can stop it, and it is heart breaking to see the hillsides covered in dead trees. So go to the Green Effect website and vote for Tristan’s idea! (Yes, you have to register but it is super quick and the don’t harass you via email….I promise!)
