Half Marathon Weekend!

What are y’all up to this weekend? I’ve been fairly quiet about it on the blog, but I will be running the Georgetown to Idaho Springs half marathon tomorrow!

In all actuality, I have 17-18 miles on the schedule for tomorrow, so I will more than likely be running this in the morning, driving back to Denver, and then running a couple of more. But, we’ll see how that turns out 🙂

I registered for this half marathon MONTHS ago because both my mom and Cindy wanted to run it as their first ever half marathons! Who could pass up the opportunity to watch their friends and fam complete their first 13.1? Not me! Unfortunately, my mom tore her ACL last year while skiing with me and she may have pushed the training too hard. As of now, it is still up in the air as to whether or not she will be running.

The good thing about the GTIS half marathon? The elevation profile!

I keep telling myself that I really don’t want to go fast and that a PR is completely out of the question. After all, this is just a training run, right? However, when you look at a course with that much elevation drop AND I know that I have been putting in lots of training and a PR is highly likely, it is definitely hard to resist. I have a feeling I’ll make the decision during the first mile of the race 🙂

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

What are you doing this weekend?

What do you think: go for a PR or just take it nice and slooooooow and think of my marathon at the end of September?

I think I would struggle to NOT go for a PR, but be careful to avoid being super tough on your quads! 🙂

good luck on your run! (:

I’m running that for the 3rd year in a row 🙂

PS. take it easy. I can barely walk for a few days after this one. And don’t let the profile deceive you into thinking its all downhill and “easy” – try to stay towards the middle of the road as its very graded.

Ohhhh man, that would be a hard call. Since your goal is to do your marathon in September you should probably stick with the pace you need to do to best accomplish that.

But me? I’d probably try to PR. ‘Cause I’m obstinate like that.

My initial reaction was PR!, but after reading the comments, maybe you should stick with your prescribed training pace… but that will be super hard to do… 🙂

Hmm… I would say use it as a training run but I wouldn’t be able to resist trying for the PR! I’m running a half on Sunday with a similar elevation profile that I’m going to try to PR in… but my marathon isn’t until December. Whatever you decide have FUN!! 🙂

I am running the GTIS as well. I am a rookie so take my advice how you will. You’ll be having burning quads for about 3 days, as someone else noted. I pushed a 14-mile long training run that had a similar elevation profile for this about 3 weeks ago and it took 3 days to get my legs back under me but they were completely fine for the 11 the next weekend and I got my other three 4 milers in just fine before that (I think they helped kick the lactic acid out). I say go for it. Your legs will heal in a week or two max and I have been running faster in my tempo runs after that pushing long run. You have 7 weeks it sounds like and your long run next week is probably 19 or 20. I say just do the 13.1 tomorrow, go for a 2 or 3 mile walk/jog Sunday to try to get some lactic acid out. Then see how you feel. Your 13.1 tomorrow would be like doing an easy 20 on your legs anyway.

Good luck!! I hope you have lots of fun and get some sweet swag;). Remember down hill seems easy until you can’t walk. All that pounding can sneak up on you.

Have a great run!!! I have never done the race, so I can’t be helpful there, but we always stop in Idaho Springs at 2 Brothers to get sweet potato burritos on our way up the mountain.

YOU HAVE TO GO FAST 🙂 IT’S ALL DOWNHILL 🙂

I’d go fun fast…not painful, but fun. Because that makes perfect sense! But really, have fun. Its all downhill! 🙂

How’d it go? Got 1:51:38 for my first half. Was shooting for 1:55 and I run without a watch so I was stoked.

Dang, another race we ran together that we didn’t meet up for – one day we WILL have to plan something in advanced :). Anyway, hope you had a great time at GTIS, it is one of my absolute favorite races ever, despite the fact that I sucked big time this year (that’s not the race’s fault…that’s my out of sorry shape fault!). Was a perfect day for the race, hope it went well for you.

I hope that the half marathon went well and I also hope that your mom was able to run! Can’t wait to hear about it.
