My dad used to call me Imelda after Imelda Marcos, the lady who had about a zillion pairs of shoes. And it’s true– I still have a lot. However, I was tossing around the idea of spring cleaning (yeah, probably not going to happen!) and I made the realization that at least a third of my shoes fall into the active wear category.
I’ll own it: this makes me feel a smidgen better about this ridiculous extravagance. I mean, at least they serve a purpose, right?!
Let’s check them out!
First up on this ridiculous list of shoes is all of my running footwear. This is the category that I have been stressing about the most lately. Until now, I’ve always run in Brooks Adrenalines and lightly dabbled in minimalist shoes with the Merrell Pace Gloves and Vibram Five Fingers. The VFFs don’t work for me because of the toes: my lovely feet, among their other issues, have bunions, and the seam on the VFFs digs into one of them. I can wear them if I’m just walking around, but that’s about it. When I made that realization, I switched to the Pace Gloves for 0 drop shoes and have been pretty happy…..I’m just not ready to run more than a mile in them yet because my calves might blow up!
Cycling shoes are next on my list, but luckily, there are only two pairs: my Shimano roadies (right) and my Nike mountain bike shoes (left).
I bought the Nikes when I first started using clipless pedals and those green monsters are the same shoes that I used to cycle across the country. I purposely picked mountain shoes because they have a softer, more rubbery sole (similar to running shoes) while road shoes only have hard plastic on the bottom. This makes your stroke more powerful because they are more stiff, but it also means they can be tricky to walk on rocks (or grocery store floors!) I will admit that I think it’s time to retire the Nikes and get a new pair of mountain shoes…. but it hasn’t happened yet π
Winter is walking out the door currently (!) but I’m still keeping all of my snow-related shoes out just in case! I’m not convinced that this 70 degree weather is going to last!
Randomness, yes? I included my new birthday snowshoes because they have the word “shoe” in them. I figure that counts, right? The rest are basic winter shoes: the blue plastic boot (cause I didn’t feel like lugging both upstairs!) is my Nordica ski boot, the black ones with orange laces are my Scarpa mountaineering boots, and the white ice skates…. are white ice skates. Don’t even laugh about the fact that I have ice skates– I think it’s pretty ridiculous too!
And for the record? Those purple looking slipper things are the most comfortable winter camping shoe ever made! They are all down so they are totally warm but they have a hard sole so you can wear them outside. My sis got them for me at REI and I’ve loved ’em ever since!
Last, but not least is all of my summer hiking gear!I love this category and I get excited every year when it comes time to get up in the mountains!

| (L-R): Chaco Hiking Sandals, La Sportiva climbing shoes, and Merrell hiking boots |
I’m sure you’re starting to notice a trend, but while I’m not super company-loyal in many aspects of my life, I am loyal to specific outdoor gear companies. There is nothing worse than having a pair of hiking boots freak out on you when you’re 10 miles into the backcountry! (And yes, it’s happened!) I’ve been very happy with Merrell hiking boots over the past 10 years or so, and I seem to bounce from model to model. I bought these last year when I realized my old pair had approximately zero tread left on the bottom!
The climbing shoes are ANCIENT! Like, seriously old…. but I’m happy with them, so why change it up? I love my Chaco’s also, and they are perfect for easy day hikes when it’s 500 degrees outside and I absolutely don’t need full-on hiking boots. I love that they are adjustable too because my feet swell like a mother when I’m hiking all day!
So what inspired this massive dialogue on all of my shoes? I got a new pair, of course!
I told y’all last week that I was selected to be a member of Columbia’s OmniTen. I also mentioned that they had sent a big ol’ box of gear that I was dying to try out! Some remains untested as of yet, but unfortunately, the shoes that I received had been a few sizes too small. However, my mom was psyched because conveniently, they were her size. She’s been strolling around in her new Powerdrain shoes while I anxiously waited the arrival of mine!
And they came yesterday! They are part of Columbia’s new line of spring gear and I am loving the concept although I’ve only worn them in my living room as of now. The shoe allows water to drain so that your feet aren’t covered with sloshing water when you’re hiking around! This will be key for spring hikes when all the snowpack from the mountains is melting. I’m also liking the quickdraw laces just because I’m lazy and hate shoes that come untied. It’s a pet peeve!

Love it – I am a shoe junkie. I couldn’t even begin to count the pairs to be honest. I’d probably be slightly embarrassed and shocked actually. And mine aren’t just workout shoes. Oh no, heels, wedges, pumps, sandals, boots boots boots, more heels, more wedges….
Oh girl, don’t even get me started on my NON-athletic related shoes! I have a boot problem! Specifically, heeled black boots….I heart them π
You can learn a lot about a person based off their shoes =) Don’t worry, I have about the same amount of shoes in MY closet too, except they’re all running shoes. I just can’t help it. When I see my shoe on sale, I buy it. I think I have three pairs of long run shoes and three pairs of gym/short run shoes. Not to mention the countless pairs that have been retired, or that I wear to walk around in. Now my “big girl” shoes on the other hand… I have about 2 of those =)
Holy crap woman, that’s a lot of shoes. I only ever have 3 pairs of running shoes at a time (2 road and one trail) and then flip flops and Uggs. That’s it. Haha you are a shoe collecter π
I know! I’m feeling pretty psyched that I didn’t put ALL of my shoes in these pictures… I’d be even more ashamed than I already am π
Haha, my parents always called me Imelda too – I had an online shoe sale recently when I had to pare down my running shoe collection (doctor’s orders). Now I just want to go shopping for more!
I love that they use the Imelda reference too! Must be a generational thing, but I feel like no one ever gets it!
Oh, love your Powerdrains. They are a different color than mine. I love shoes but must admit I don’t have an overabundance. Over the past few years I’ve whittled my belongings down =)
Wow! I thought I had a lot until this post! I seem to have a ton but only wear like 3 pairs regularly – go figure.
I’m 100% in the same boat– maybe even worse. I do not see anything wrong with it!! π
Congrats on the Columbia gig!! that’s amazing!! And I have a coat addiction – probably own 30 coats. :/
Thank you! And yeah…. coats. We’ll save that post for another day π
I think you have me beat on all the active shoe wear.
I may or may not have 4 pairs of Brooks Ravennas. I may or may not have multiple Merrel hikers.
That’s because Brooks AND Merrell are AWESOME!
We don’t have quite as many shoes as you but are currently struggling to figure out how many different types of shoes we need with us when launch in to our great Sprinter adventure. One van, two people…for at least a couple of years. (Oh, and our dog will probably even have booties from RuffWear…)
When I backpacked around for a year, I had hiking boots, running shoes, and hiking sandals– that was it! Granted, it was in South America though and I really never looked good π
Haha I’m just like you! I love all kinds of shoes! Running shoes, flats, pumps, sandals, etc. Even here at work, I have 7 pairs of shoes that live under my desk! π
i have a post queued up on this very topic…i’m beginning to think i have a hoarding issue with running shoes π
Let’s see – Pearl Izumi Streak II, Adidas Swyft Cushion, Asics GT2500, Adidas Campus, a pair of sandals, old New Balance running shoes for hiking, a pair of Land’s End winter boots, and one brown pair of dress shoes. Eight pairs.
I seriously need to get a pair of cycling shoes, a new pair of running shoes, and a work shoe though, so it SHOULD be 11.
And yes, the snow shoes count, but I’m not sure about the ice skates (no “shoe” in those).
I like that you NEED to get a few new pairs– I’d already be at the store by now π
i love shoes too. although… most of mine are dressy flats to wear to work, but i do have my fair share of running shoes and people wonder what’s wrong with me. i think it’s just common for some of us.
Ha! You live in Colorado, that is what Coloradans do! I have 3 pairs of running shoes, hiking shoes, 2 pairs of cycling shoes, 2 pairs of nice flats, 3 pairs of casual flats, 2 pairs of flip flops, 1 pair of clogs, 1 pair of heels (for emergencies), 2 pairs of Uggs, 1 pair of Sorels, 1 pair of Frye boots, 1 pair of ski boots, 1 pair of snowboard boots, 1 pair of Toms…and I am pretty sure I am forgetting something. I am not sure how I fit all this into my tiny condo!
I’m glad you gave me a “reason”! One day we can all take a look at the my normal shoes…. but I figure this is enough shame for one post!
I love your collection! My crazy shoe collection consists mostly of different athletic shoes too- and i LOVE my Vibrams and my Brooks! (And YOURS!)
I prefer Lakes for cycling shoes- the first pair I ever bought (of road shoes) were Nikes and they just did not fit right.
Never tried Lakes! I do really need a new pair of mountain shoes, but I’m pretty happy with either Shimano or Pearl Izumi, so I imagine it will be one of them. Actually, it should probably be this summer…. SHOE SHOPPING!
I love the looks of those purple insulated boots π genius.
and I like the new kicks. I also have hiking sandals. I wore the shit out of my merrell water sandals π I loved them so much
I actually DONATED my brand new Merrell insulated hiking shoes. Why?
not a clue. I’m an idiot.
Brand new shoes?! Are you crazy, woman?! π
I love when people give tours of their shoes which probably makes me strange, but yeah I pretty much love shoes π
Nice collection! I currently have 9 pairs of shoes…and I am a dude! I swear the more you train and exercise the bigger your collection gets! I was just pricing a pair of shoes as I read your post, which made me well aware of my growing addiction…
Haha…. I feel even worse because in addition to the Powerdrain that I just got, I’m headed to the store tomorrow for a pair of Brooks PureCadence π
I love this post! I have a similar “problem”: tons of shoes and most of them are for Colorado shenanigans! My Chacos are my babies, I die for them, and I am totally a believer in Merrill hiking boots as well. I just got a new pair in August and never had to ‘break them in.’ First and every hike = no blisters… Love it!
The best part is that I totally have the same exact pair of ice skates as you, hahaha.
That’s how I am with my merrells too! I never get blisters and literally take them out of the box and start hiking! Gotta love that!
Ok, are your ice skates like 20 years old like mine?!
Great post Heather! Honestly I have over 100 pairs of shoes. One day when I’m feeling brave I’m going to count them all up and see how many of what type I have but I know it’s bad. This is what working in a shoe store for a couple of years did to me!
The first step is admitting you have a problem… LOL!
I love shoes too, but tank tops even more. In particular, Lululemon’s Power Y. I have at least a dozen and can’t resist picking up a new colour every time I enter the store (a great reason to stay out of the mall!).
Oh boy confession? You know those over the door organizers? I have two of the full of shoes plus another heaping pile. Most serve a fitness function though. Or they’re heels that only go with “that one outfit”
Hahaha…I love all your shoes!!! I have entirely too many flip flops and summer shoes. I have a whole rack that has 36 openings on the back of my door and I have between 2-3 pairs IN EACH ONE! HAHA. i just can’t bring myself to get rid of any b/c I have the “what if” thought…
Great post btw =)
Surprisingly, I don’t own many shoes. I’ve got 4 pairs of athletic shoes, a few flats, and too many heels that piss off my new bunions. Awesome.
I am thinking you win the most shoes contest considering we are just looking at active shoes. A tip of the hat to your awesome active shoe collection. I will now direct my husband to your sight to prove that no, I do not in fact have the most shoes in the world.
My dad used to call me Imelda too!!! Too funny. Now I definitely have more athletic shoes than any other shoe. Like 10 to one.
I have approximately 60 pairs of shoes. I guess I should do some spring cleaning too! I love Merrell; they make my favorite sandals, of which I have 3 pair!
Holy shoes, Batman! My hiking boots are Merrell too – LOVE them.
You were right when you said you’d rather spend money on equipment than concerts! I have so many of those shoes on my wish list right now – new running shoes (when I actually get my butt running), snow shoes, snowboard boots, xc ski boots, etc. I think I have about 8 pairs of shoes, TOTAL! π
I want those comfy fluffy purple camp shoes π
