It Ain’t Easy Being Green

Guess what? I finally got around to doing my mini 24-hour green smoothie cleanse! I started Tuesday night at 5pm and kept at it until this morning’s breakfast (of course, that is excluding my cup of coffee in there!) Not gonna lie: at first, I was a little skeptical of whether or not this concoction of colorful fruits and veggies was going to keep me full…but I was pleasantly surprised!

So anyway, I woke up yesterday at 5:30 like usual, drank my coffee, and then made my smoothie around 6:30 just as I was heading out the door for work. I have a travel blender that has a removable cup with a drinking hole in the top, so I figured I could just take it with me. First, I packed in a SERIOUS amount of spinach. Like a lot. Like half the blender.

After the spinach, I added about half of a container of raspberries and another half of a container of blueberries. I chucked some ice cubes in there and a little bit of water and mixed. And mixed. And then mixed some more. I didn’t want any little leaf bits floating around cause I thought it would be weird!

Anyway, I kept mixing and while I stared at the green concoction forming, I started to get a little worried. I work in landscaping and we are in our crazy busy season. What happens if this weird liquid blend didn’t keep me full past 8am? That would totally not work for the day I had ahead of me! Because of this, I threw in 2 scoops of Chia seeds, as well as another 2 scoops of the whey protein powder that I take daily. I figured the protein would give me something more substantial, and the chia seeds are great at keeping me full longer. And you know what?! It totally did! I drank the first smoothie at 6:30 and I never got truly hungry until I drank my second one at noon for lunch. I drank 3 more throughout the afternoon and evening, and I’ve gotta say that they aren’t terrible! Pretty tasty actually!

Ok, now for the downfall: I was CRAVING carbs by the end of the night! I was totally envisioning crackers or a pizza or spaghetti or SOMETHING more substantial by dusk. It was kinda weird though cause although I wanted all of these foods, I wasn’t really hungry. I think my body has just gotten so used to having all those things that I was like a heroin junkie going through withdrawals! Crazy!!!

So final verdict? Success. I feel a lot better, even though my little detox session was only for 24 hours. My guess is that I would probably have to do this dealio for longer than that to truly reap the detoxification benefits, and maybe I will try that at one point. Who knows. For now, I think I’ll stick to doing this a few times a month. I don’t think my lifestyle is conducive to me eating so few calories for much longer than a day at a time, you know? (Although I did go for a 4-mile run and I felt fine).

Oh, and by the way….I totally ate Mexican food when it was all said and done. You can take the toxins out of my body, but you sure as hell can’t take away my cheese!

Have you ever tried anything like this? Or an actual REAL detox? Which one? Did you like it?

I am juuuuust about ready to add spinach into my smoothies. I know now that it shouldn’t change the flavor, just magnify its nutritional value.

hmmmmmmmm, so you made a big batch or carried all that stuff around with you and made separate smoothies for each meal?

Eww, that would be gross to carry it around all day! 🙂 Nope, I’m lucky enough that I often work out of my home or my family’s house, so I have easy access to a blender. I just made them when I wanted them!
