I’ve Been Keeping A Secret

Well, if you know me in real life, it’s not a secret. And, in reality, it isn’t a straight-up secret: I just haven’t made the blog-world official announcement. What am I talking about?

Will and I moved in together!

It’s hasn’t been too long, but I wanted to wait to say anything till we were able to get settled. You see, we didn’t just rent a place: there was a house purchase involved! Will knew he wanted to buy a place when he got to Colorado, so I spent weeks doing some reconnaissance for him before he arrived. I knew what he was looking for, but I couldn’t believe the amount of disastrous homes that were on the market at the time. What happened to the cow-town real estate that I remember from the early 90s?! Denver’s real estate market is bumpin’ right now, and I was horrified at some of the houses he was finding and could not believe their listing prices! Luckily, he found a home he loved when he came out to visit me in late April, and the rest, as they say, is history!

My lease wasn’t up until weeks later, but as it grew closer and closer to my move-out date, we realized that there was no need for me to find another place to live. So, I recently left my apartment and moved into the new house!

Tals, of course, is loving it. She has been stuck in an apartment for a few years now, so she is beyond ecstatic to have a big ol’ backyard. In fact, it’s like she has a new lease on life! She is also completely smitten with Will, and I daresay that he has usurped me for the #1 spot in her life. She goes bonkers when he gets home from work at the end of the day, and has even coined a new acrobatic maneuver that she throws out in her excitement to see him; we like to call it the “Tals Shoulder Roll.” We are also located extremely close to lots of trails and ponds and stuff, so the trail running opportunities are endless. In short, we are loving our new home and life together.

Naturally, there have been some adjustment issues for both of us. I have lived on my own for the past 5-6 years, and he had been solo in San Diego for at least the past two years, so compromise has become the name of the game. He is far more particular about organization whereas I’m…..just the opposite! He is focused on updating the inside of the house while I am champing at the bit to re-landscape the exterior. Luckily, we’re tackling projects on both ends of the spectrum, so we have plenty to keep us busy! (I imagine you’ll catch a glimpse of some DIY home projects in the future!)

Our new floors and the pink camping chair!

The house itself is somewhat older so we have lots of updates planned for the next couple of years. We both really love hardwood floors, so we made the decision to replace all of the carpeting before we moved in all the furniture. Unfortunately, the floors took a few weeks longer than planned, so Will and I have gotten incredibly skilled at “house camping!” I drank my morning coffee while sitting in a pink camping chair up until recently!

Poor Will has also realized that the fabled female shoe addiction is not a myth. We set up a couple of shoe racks last night and he was (luckily) entertained by this:

That’s normal, right?!

Would y’all have any interest in reading about our DIY projects? In particular, I personally am tackling a three-tier mixed veggie/perennial bed, an mini orchard, a rose garden, and a perennial shade garden….hopefully before next spring!

Who dominates the shoe racks in your house?

That is a lot of pink shoes! I totally dominate the shoe rack too, the I have shoes under the bed and in two different closets 😉

Congrats on moving in together.. big steps! exciting steps!

Congratulations! That’s great that you bought a house! That amazes me about the Denver housing market too. My family specifically moved to CO in the 90’s just because the housing market was so affordable with good quality homes. Sad to see that’s changing!

And the shoe rack thing is EXACTLY the same in my house 😉

Congrats!! When Chris and I moved in together it was WWIII. Seriously. Like WHOA. Luckily it only lasted a little while haha.

And I personally love that all your shoes are pretty much athletic 😉

I LOVE hardwood floors. We refinished our floors back in Ohio but I always dreamed of having new one hardwood installed. After years of DIY I admit I’m loving just renting right now. Have fun!

It’ll take a bit but because it’s so new, we’re focusing on all of my boxes of stuff first 🙂

I would love to see all your DIY projects (indoor and out) … and the can I fly you out to California to do them at my house? 😉

Totally interested in reading about your DIY projects, especially landscaping stuff! Congrats on your move in together! John has so many pairs of inov8s that we are pretty even on the shoe rack. We have a hard time throwing shoes away. Compromise, sacrifice (on both sides) and patience are the keys to cohabiting. John and I purchased a house together before we were engaged, and while slightly terrifying, it was still one of the best decisions we ever made! Enjoy all the projects!

You’re not joking. The real estate market in our neighborhood is crazy!!! We can’t believe what the houses around us are selling for.. good news if we ever decide to move back to Minnesota. The shoe rack cracks me up. Kevin actually has a decent number of shoes but I have at least double.

Hey! This is great news! So happy for the two of you. Housing projects can be great bonding time.

Congrats! I love the stone fireplace – so cozy 🙂 Moving in with anyone, much less a boy, is definitely an adjustment! Brian and I laugh at the things we each cared about so much when we first moved in together that now seem so irrelevant!

Aren’t you sly! I’m happy for you–exciting stuff! Have fun with all the projects–that’s what makes a house a home.

Yes please…more DIY! Especially the landscaping stuff. Today is my one year anniversary of moving to CO from San Diego to be with my guy 🙂 And we recently bought a house and moved in together…and installed new hardwood floors…and are working on a ton of indoor/outdoor house projects. Sound familiar? Congrats to you and Will! I look forward to reading about more adventures!

Ha, I didn’t realize this was a secret, good thing I didn’t “out” you by mistake! Congrats officially now that it’s out in the open! I love the hardwood floors. To be brutally honest I would have to skim over any DIY posts but I know most people love them!

Any suggestions on how you made your long-distance relationship work out? Currently in one and have a lot of doubts. Would love to hear what worked for you guys. I live in Boulder; he’s in KS. Only 500 miles away, so it could be worse. Please email me (niomihansenwilliams@gmail.com) about it if you ever have the time–I’d be super grateful! Thanks!
