Friday dawned beautiful on Kauai, and my parents and I decide to do something a bit different than our usual laying-on-the-beach routine. Instead, I had discovered that the east coast of the island had a bike path in the works, and although it is not complete, 8 miles is paved and rideable.
Clearly, we needed to rent cruiser bikes!
Let me preface this by telling you that both my dad and I are far more used to our road and mountain bikes than cruiser bikes! For the life of me, I could not remember that the brakes were in the pedals instead of the handlebars! Granted, that is exactly how my bike was when I was a kid, but it has been a looooooooooong time since I have needed to back pedal in order to stop!
Once I figured out how to stop, the bike path was awesome. It was a fun way to check out a side of the island that isn’t often explored.
Even better? We decided to take our beach cruisers and do a little riding, my way 🙂
Yup, we decided to take our cruisers and do a little off-roading!
And admittedly, that portion of things was a bit of a shit show 🙂 I laughed because I kept trying to ride over bumpy rocks and that bike was not meant for that. Whatever, though. I have mentioned before that I’m a rebel; I’m pretty sure this confirms that!
After we *somehow* managed to ride down the bluff, we found a beautiful and deserted beach.
The water was really rough so we couldn’t splash around in the waves like we usually do, but it felt so nice and cold.
We stayed at the beach for a half hour before we decided to ride back into Kapa’a. In the end, we only rode for 8-9 miles, but it was a good way to shake out the legs after my brutal treadmill run the day before. Plus, I really wanted to check out the east coast of Kauai and this was the perfect way to do it!
Now I want to come back next year to hike the Na Pali coast 🙂

Thank you x 44!!
Yay!! You’re welcome!!!
The photos are gorgeous! 🙂
Weird. My blogger roll has totally not been telling me that you have been posting!!! WTH is going on??????
ANYWAY…..Cruiser bikes are for people who want a bike they think is super cute and pretty for enjoyment of their laid back surroundings, and have no interest in biking for adrenaline or exercise….but I’m on your side for the more practical dual purposes!
Loving your pic’s so far!
No idea! I’m having serious commenting issues too– some people are able to comment via Blogger, like this, and others are still sending comments (somehow) through Intense Debate….which I get the notifications on, but they don’t show up here. My blog is on crack!!
eeeek! i’m going to hawaii in june and spending 2 days on kauai, this is getting me so pumped!
Yay! This was my 2nd time in Kauai and it is so beautiful. You’ll have an awesome time!
I don’t understand Cruiser bikes either. They really don’t make sense in Colorado so I will never own one.
I miss Hawaii – these photos are killing me. I love your bike ride with the parents and I don’t like cruiser either 😛
So beautiful! Honestly, I wish I had never bought my mountain bike. I don’t ever intend to mountain bike anywhere, but I bought it because I thought it was the type of bike I was supposed to have. I also don’t want to sell my soul for a nice road bike (because I wouldn’t ride that much either), so I REALLLLLY want a fun cruiser bike to ride around downtown, through the parks, and on the Cherry Creek Trail. I probably just spoke heresy, but I can’t lie! 😛
Haha, it’s cool 🙂 I think because I love cycling so much, I would never spend the money to just “cruise.” However, if I didn’t like riding, a cruiser would probably be perfect.
Wow is that beautiful! How fun that you are doing the trip w/your parents. Nope, never ridden one of those bike–I’d probably be the same way with the brakes!
It is fun 🙂 Once you get older, “fam trips” don’t ever happen, but we try to keep up the trend of doing it at least occasionally. An ex-boyfriend and I went to Egypt with them a few years ago, and we all had a great time!
gorgeous pics!!! i am sooooo jealous right now!!!!!!!
Congrats EMZ!!!
I have never ridden a cruiser bike. I don’t understand them either, lol…
LOVING the photos:) Enjoy the islands!
I think the last time I was on a bike it was a cruiser… full on 70s banana seat Brady Bunch style! That was back when I was 12… I should get one and cruise again! 🙂 Great post and beautiful pics!
Purpose of a cruiser bike = old people!
Old people = my mother, who really isn’t that old…or so I tell her!
😉
Looks like an amazing ride, beautiful scenery and taking a little trip off the beaten path is always the best route!
I am seriously jealous
I only have a cruiser – hoping to change that this year! Also, your photos are INCREDIBLE!!!! So glad you’re enjoying your time in Hawaii – it’s snowing here today!
No cruiser bike here, but my husband and I just got our road bikes put together! I haven’t ridden a bike in FOREVER so I am a little bit scared! It might also be slightly too big for me 🙁 or I’m just a loser who can’t balance!
Beautiful photos. So gorgeous!
Haha I know what you mean about cruiser bikes being all wacky with the brakes…I can’t stand them! But I suppose they are all comfy and upright, so I can see why some people really enjoy then.
Lovin’ your hawaii photos!!!!!!
