Friday dawned beautiful on Kauai, and my parents and I decide to do something a bit different than our usual laying-on-the-beach routine. Instead, I had discovered that the east coast of the island had a bike path in the works, and although it is not complete, 8 miles is paved and rideable.
Clearly, we needed to rent cruiser bikes!
Let me preface this by telling you that both my dad and I are far more used to our road and mountain bikes than cruiser bikes! For the life of me, I could not remember that the brakes were in the pedals instead of the handlebars! Granted, that is exactly how my bike was when I was a kid, but it has been a looooooooooong time since I have needed to back pedal in order to stop!
Once I figured out how to stop, the bike path was awesome. It was a fun way to check out a side of the island that isn’t often explored.
Even better? We decided to take our beach cruisers and do a little riding, my way 🙂
Yup, we decided to take our cruisers and do a little off-roading!
And admittedly, that portion of things was a bit of a shit show 🙂 I laughed because I kept trying to ride over bumpy rocks and that bike was not meant for that. Whatever, though. I have mentioned before that I’m a rebel; I’m pretty sure this confirms that!
After we *somehow* managed to ride down the bluff, we found a beautiful and deserted beach.
The water was really rough so we couldn’t splash around in the waves like we usually do, but it felt so nice and cold.
We stayed at the beach for a half hour before we decided to ride back into Kapa’a. In the end, we only rode for 8-9 miles, but it was a good way to shake out the legs after my brutal treadmill run the day before. Plus, I really wanted to check out the east coast of Kauai and this was the perfect way to do it!
Now I want to come back next year to hike the Na Pali coast 🙂
