Lessons from the Bobby Pin: Why Must We Complicate Everything?

In a sheer case of mistaken identity, I received an invite to Tuesday night’s launch party in Boulder for the new Gore-Tex Pro. Naturally, that in itself was pretty cool and we can chat about it later, but this isn’t about that.

It’s more about the bobby pins.

While getting ready, I pulled out a new package of bobby pins that I purchased last week. I’m a huge proponent of this glorious little hair accessory and use them daily….and buy them just as frequently. Chicas, I don’t know about you, but I go through bobby pins like they’re disposable! I lose them, hide them, suck them up in the vacuum cleaner, whatever. The point is that I seem to venture to the store monthly to procure a new pouch of pins.

However, as I grabbed a handful to pull my hair off my face, I noticed an addition to the bobby pin packaging:

Let me focus in a bit for you:

In all that is good on this earth, what in the hell is a bobby pin opener?!

I took to the Instagram to pose this question, and apparently all of y’all had noticed this same thing. The most common response? “I opened the package and threw that thing away.” Seriously, when did it become too much work to use your teeth or, heaven forbid your fingers, to open a bobby pin?

The more I thought about it, this silly contraption makes sense. After all, don’t we live in an era where we tend to overcomplicate simple things on the regular?  Buy items that are meant to simplify our lives but only cause more chaos and confusion? Isn’t that the flagship of any infomercial?!

Even more so, I realized that my bobby pin lesson spills into my daily routine, too. I frequently overcomplicate issues at work when they truly just require a simply answer. Do you ever do that?

I don’t like to overcomplicate things much, I would throw that thing out too, I would just lose it anyway. I like to keep things simple 🙂

I like that the package actually says, “No teeth needed.” I’m too lazy to over complicate things. 🙂

Sooooo…. In all this post about the bobby pin opener that NO ONE seems to use or know how to use, have you figured out the directions? It seems ridiculous to me since I don’t know how to use it-And haven’t encounter any horrific bobby pin mishaps…

Hi! I actually got this yesterday in a pack of bobby pins, and think it is the best thing ever hahahaha I have veneers on the front of my teeth so I am too scared to open bobby pins with my teeth. And I pick at my nails (an anxious habit) so my fingers often hurt so I am not great at opening bobby pins. Lol!! So yeah I love this little contraption hahahahaha 🙂 But really it is so small that I am pretty sure it will get lost or I will drop it all the time when I am in a hurry 😉

How to use the opener??? I can’t even get the cardboard out from between it. Get real and show instructions how to open it for starters.

My daughter and I really want to know how to use it 😂 because wtf are you supposed to do?!? In all our confusion, she now knows how to open them with her teeth and is ripping the opener thingy from the package.
