…..damnit, I wish I had a drum roll or something. Anyway, I’m going to Haiti!

So here is the deal! I’ve been itching for an adventure for awhile. As you know if you’ve been a reader for awhile, I truly crave adventures, and typically the more off-the-beaten-path, the better. Since our company closes in the winter, I typically have some time to travel or play, assuming I can come up with the funds to do so. I went to Hawaii last year to visit my sis, so this year I wanted to do something different.
I put out a tweet, asking anyone if they had any suggestions for a grand adventure for me. Let me tell you: I got some AWESOME suggestions. Bike touring through Zambia. Climbing Kilimanjaro through Big City Mountaineers. A month-long rafting trip. All of these were awesome, but I hadn’t quite found “the one” until I received this tweet from Mission 29.2:
Naturally, this tweet piqued my interest, so I contacted Mission 29.2. We communicated, I thought about it for 48 hours (hey, that’s improvement for me! At least I didn’t say yes on the spot!), and then I sent them my deposit on Friday. I’m going to Haiti!
Let me tell you the deal: Mission 29.2 is a Chicago-based non-profit that organizes 29.2 mile runs in developing communities, such as Haiti. The run is used as a launching point to develop awareness for the educational needs in the community. As most of you know, Haiti has been a country in need of assistance long before the earthquake in 2010, but even more so after the fact.
So what am I going to do? I’m going to head down there in January, 2013, with a group of other volunteers/runners and do whatever is needed. From what I gather now, we’ll spend some time at an orphanage, maybe take the kids to the beach, and visit a clinic. We’ll meet up with a lot of the Haitians who are planning on running the race, and this part of the trip is still hazy for me. Would I like to run all 29.2 miles? Of course, but an ultra runner, I am not! Well, at least not yet, anyway! I imagine I’ll decide the morning of, but I will definitely run some of it.

However, I more interested in working with the people and helping them in whatever way I possibly can. Obviously, as a grad student studying education, I value its importance and truly believe that accessibility to education is a critical component to future success. These kiddos deserve that opportunity and I’d like to help them attain it.
And…that’s where y’all come in! Want to know how you can help?!Â
I am going to be doing some fundraising for this trip. I’d like to clarify up front that this fundraising is not, in any way, funding my trip– I am paying for my cost and airfare on my own. Instead, any money I raise will go directly towards the two affiliated schools in Ounaminthe. Any money I raise will give these kids a leg up and help them stand a chance at a more successful future.

Option A:
Guys, I am the first to admit that I HATE asking people for money…it’s so freaking awkward. However, I really believe in this. I know that no one has a lot of extra money these days, but if you are able to donate anything–even just $1!– between now and January, please hop on over here and submit your donation. Just be sure to include my name in the notes section so they know you love me! And don’t worry– I’m sure I’ll mention this again in the coming months, so if you can’t donate anything right now, I’ll remind you later 🙂
Option B:
If you don’t have any money to donate, maybe you have some used running shoes or gear that you are looking to get rid of? Shoes are an issue down there, and some of the Haitians that run this race end up cruising through all 29.2 miles in Toms. Can you imagine? If you have any old running shoes, Fuel Belts, etc, please let me know and I will get them down there with me. Just shoot me a quick email or leave me a note in the comments, and we’ll figure it out!

I love this!!! I wish I had known about the shoes before we packed and I got rid of 8 pairs!! Most of my students I have now have come to Massachusetts because their homes and things were destroyed due to the hurricane! They have amazing stories of survival and are awesome kids!! I will try to help as much as I can!!!
Thank you! I really appreciate it 🙂
Hey! I’m pretty sure my boyfriend and I have at least 5 pairs of sneakers just laying around collecting dust ranging from used to barely used. Let me know how we can get them to you!
Would you mind sending me an email? JustAColoradoGal@gmail.com Then I can get my address to you and we can figure out all the details. Thanks!
What an incredible opportunity!! I’m so excited for you! I’m rummage around our house to see what we have. We have like a gazillion water bottles and old running shoes. I can’t wait to hear more about this and your stories from Haiti!
That’s awesome, Heather! That will definitely be a different kind of adventure, indeed! You have a good heart.
I love this! I have quite the shoe collection. If there is a way I can ship them somewhere, I’d be interested!
Yes! Would you mind sending me an email? I think for the time being all shoes, etc are coming to my apartment and Mission 29.2 and I will figure out how to get them down to Haiti. Thanks!!!!!
Congrats! What a great opportunity. Do you have an address for shipping? I may be able to gather up some goods.
I do have an address! Would you mind sending me an email? Then I can send you my address without plastering it all over the web 🙂 Thank you!
That’s awesome! I have been to Haiti, both as learning experience and personal trip (my family is Haitian). It’s a beautiful country with great people, and I’m sure you’ll have a great time there!
I have a ton of old running shoes that I keep forgetting to bring to the donation bin at my running store!
That’s a sure sign you should send them to me! Shoot me an email and we can figure it out! Thanks, friend!

This is so amazingly cool. Something like this is definitely on my bucket list.
Big time stuff… im ready for an adventure of my own.
Sooo cool! If you’ve read any of my posts from going to Congo this summer, you know I am super excited for you about this. Amazing! I am looking forward to hearing more about it and would like to donate. Please keep posting about it because I have already given my allotted donation money for this pay period but next pay period, I can. I don’t want to forget!
I did read your posts and I was SO jealous of your trip!! I promise, I will mention this again (probably until you’re sick of it!) so you can figure out a donation in the future. Thank you so much!!!
Amazing. Can’t wait to keep hearing about this wonderful adventure. It’s going to be so emotional.
This is SO exciting!! I really envy your adventures. I wish I had done more stuff like this in my 20s.
20s were quite the adventure….but now I’m officially in my 30s, so I figured I would start it off with a bang! 🙂
I have some shoes that i would like to get rid of! Let me know where I can send them for a donation! I would love to post some info about it on my blog too to help you out!! 🙂
That would be awesome if you posted this– thanks! And as for the shoes, please shoot me an email and we’ll get that sorted out. THANKS!
What an AWESOME way to combine passions! Nice going!
I have shoes I can donate!
Thanks! Will you send me an email so I can shoot you my mailing address for shoes? Trying to keep my address off the internets 🙂
This is going to be an amazing trip, Heather! I bet you’ll come away feeling like you were given more than you gave… I was in Haiti and the DR once, it was life changing. I’m sure I can come up with some shoes or a fuel belt, let me know what you need.
I love that you are doing this for so many reasons!!! I can’t wait to see how it all comes together. I might be able to figure out a few shoes!
Donated and done! So proud of you and excited for you!
I’m in Colorado and always have running gear I can donate. Let me know what you need or how I should get it to you. I’ll put something together. HOW EXCITING!!!
Looking forward to seeing you in person to chat about helping and gathering supplies. I have not been to Haiti but lived in Miami while I was in grad school – I had Haitian undergrads in some classes I taught. I traveled to some places needing some extra assistance when in grad school (tropical ecology, go figure) and for my tropical destination wedding I orchestrated for my wedding guests to bring educational and medical supplies for an indigenous (and poor) population. This is very cool of you and I look forward to supporting you.
I just found your blog – I LOVE Haiti- and have been 2x in the last 1 1/2. The first time I did medical mobile clinics after the earthquake (I’m a RN) and the second time I worked in a Cholera tent hospital when the Cholera was out of control there. The people are AMAZING…and I’m still in touch with many Haitian friends that I met there. You will bless them and be so blessed yourself.

THis is AWESOME!!! If you don’t need legit running clothes (like, not performance stuff), I have old tshirts and shorts that I’d be happy to send your way! And probably a pair of shoes too.
So exciting!! i’m super jealous!! I don’t have much money, but maybe in the future I’ll have a little bit more, but maybe I can come up with some old running gear! Possibly shoes, I’m about to get new shoes…. I’ll let you know! racingthestates.wordpress.com
I would love love love to do an international trip like this and have looked at several over the past 8 or so years, but have never been able to afford it. I will try and keep an eye out for extra used running gear for you!
That is awesome! I love Haiti – lived there for 2 years and speak fluent Haitian Creole. I love the people and love the country. I am jealous that you are going. I was there in 87-89, but haven’t been back since. It’s killing me not to go back, but I am sure there is something I can do. I will have to think how I can help, or maybe you can offer a suggestion or two?
Mike/Saltygunner
From what I gather, the most helpful way to help is via a donation. If that is totally impossible, then any used running shoes you have would also be helpful. I appreciate it!
This is so awesome! I’m very excited for you. If you need a training buddy in the fall, let me know!
That sounds amazing! I’m sure it will be an absolutely wonderful experience. So glad you found your adventure!
What a beautiful experience that will be! I’ll see what I can do to help. We might have some shoes to donate.
In 2010 Kev and I walked the Reggae Marathon Half in Jamaica and donated shoes for the kids of Jamaica. We have always wanted to live there and help them out a lot more. One day we’ll be in a position to do that.
Forgot to mention that if you would like to write a guest post for our travel blog about this upcoming trip and request donations, I would be happy to have it and share it on FB, Twitter, etc. Our blog is newtonstravels.com
I would love to, thanks for the opportunity! When works for you?
This is amazing!! It sounds like such a cool opportunity. Is there a mailing address to send shoes to?
If you ever want me to give you a little plug or if you want to do a guest post, I’ll put it on my blog 🙂 You are such an inspiration, and I cannot wait to hear all about it!
Hey! Would you mind sending me an email and I can give you my address for the shoes?
And I would love to do a guest post on your blog. Just let me know when works for you! THANK YOU!
Very cool! I just found your blog through Kara’s and this looks awesome. Uhhh, don’t worry about the extra 3mi tacked on to the marathon. You can totally do it! I ran my first ultra last weekend and I’m all “ultras-are-awesome! Run all the things!”
This is going to be such a great opportunity and truly a once in a lifetime experience! Remind me again next month and we will be happy to support you.
Oh my goodness… this is fantastic, you are amazing! I want to go with you sooooooo badly! you have no idea
Glad to have you on the new team for Mission 29.2! I’ll be there in January 2013 with my wife. Looking forward to meeting you! Great story you have here, and I’m glad you found the right trip for you.
