I hope everyone had a great weekend! If you’ll remember from my post on Friday, I had struck a bargain with myself: if I studied up like a good student all day on Saturday, I would be allowed to head up to the hills on Sunday to go mountain biking.
Luckily for me, bribery has always worked!Β I got almost 15 pages written on Saturday so yesterday was go time for the bike!

| Me, Craig, and Cindy |
The day started out a bit rocky because, unbeknownst to Craig, Cindy and me, we were all waiting at different trailheads. None of us had cell service in the mountains, and it turned out they were sitting at a slightly hidden pull off about 1/4 mile down the road from where I was waiting. Luckily after both parties separately waited and wondered for almost an hour, we found each other!
We chose Lair o’ the Bear, a fairly “beginner” trail just outside of Morrison. I say beginner loosely because, although it is not very technical, it does have some rocky sections and it is not easy! Lair o’ the Bear is a good training trail in the summer because it is a great way to get your climbing legs in shape. The trail is an out-and-back with about 2.5 miles straight uphill (roughly 1200 feet in elevation gain) followed by 2.5 right back down. Usually, I don’t think that climb is incredibly brutal…but…well, I clearly don’t have those previously mentioned cycling legs just yet!
We started up the hill and right off the bat, Cindy and I were sucking wind like it was going out of style! I have come to realize that I am a slow starter when it comes to pretty much anything: I need to start out super slow and once I’m warmed up, I can start cruising. Yesterday was no exception!
Like I mentioned, there were a few areas with some tricky technical sections. If it was two months from now, I would have probably tried out more of them then I did. However, in addition to not having my cycling legs, I also was missing my mountain biking nerve! It definitely takes a little bit of guts to hop over sketchy areas and I could tell that I hadn’t been out there since last summer. That’s what first rides are for, right?

| Nope, I wasn’t posing or anything! |
After about 45 minutes of pure climbing, we hit the summit, completely out of breath. I immediately dropped my Β bike and started chugging water, as well as slammed a Gu. Not entirely sure what flavor it was but it tasted amazing at the time π
We spent a half an hour lounging on the rocks in the sunshine until we realized we still had the good part ahead of us: heading back downhill! We dropped out butts off the back of our seats to counter our weight on our bikes and prepared to enjoy the ride!
The downhill is always exhilarating and I love the feel of dodging through rocks and trees. There was one technical section that Cindy and I both walked– the penalty for failure was a potential broken head, so we decided not to risk it. However, Craig was able to do it, and although the pics don’t do it justice, it was pretty sweet!
Another fun fact? I always wear a heart rate monitor when I exercise, and I glanced at it while bombing downhill. I expected my heart rate to still be low since I wasn’t exerting too much energy. Instead, I was sitting on 135-140 bpm’s. I guess the adrenaline does get ya going!
The whole bottom half of the trail had melted in the 80 degree temps so it was really muddy. We were zipping through the sloppy areas and we were all covered in mud by the time we got back to the car!
Even better? I only had once incident involving blood– and it happened after we got back to the parking lot! Like the class act that I am, I tripped over my bike and cogged my shin. Sigh. Too bad the carnage doesn’t come with a better story!

I wish I could ride a bike! I guess I’ll stick to hiking. π
Yup – it’s really warm here, and I’m loving every minute of it (or maybe I should say, every degree of it).
Hiking is equally awesome π
Glad you got to get out in the sun!!!
tsk tsk….you must learn to lie about your blood….I need a better gory story than that!! π
It’s already been in the 80’s here too. We’ve just skipped right over the 70’s. I’m super scared to see what summertime misery is in store for me!
Eh, I figure I do enough stupid stuff that warrants real injuries so no need to lie on this one… I’m positive there will be bigger and better blood later π
When is your half?!
Sounds like you had a fun day! PS love your shirt π
Although it doesn’t have pockets, it was GREAT for mountain biking! And I didn’t even mind the pockets since I ride with a Camelbak anyway… loved it! (Plus, it clearly allowed me to match my friends lol)
It looks like a beautiful day for biking! I like that all three of you are wearing blue shirts which I assume isn’t on purpose. Props to Craig for riding through the tricky part. I would have been walking!
Hope this is the first of many more rides for you guys as the weather warms up!
Yeah, Craig has taken some technique classes so he is really working on the tech skills. I might take a class at some point… or I might just keep launching my body off random rocks, hoping for success. Too soon to tell π
I totally didn’t realize we matched until after I got home and looked at the pics!
You guys were so matchy matchy π What a great day! I’m terrified of mountain biking.
We had snow on Thursday and then sun and 60s on Saturday. It’s a weird spring here in Oregon.
I know….the outfits kill me. I didn’t tell you, but we actually called each other before π
It is still cold and rainy in Oregon. And dumping snow up in the mountains. But I’m a skier so that’s just fine! Looks like you had wonderful weather for biking.
See, that’s what the weather SHOULD be like here (well, the snow part!)… but apparently 2012 is the year that ski season never made it to Colorado! Sigh.
What a great day! Aside from the bit of blood… thanks for the Popchips giveaway. I am pretty excited as I haven’t tried them yet.
I just emailed you.
Congrats on the win! Let me know if you enjoy them as much as I do!
Yay for fun mountain biking! We had a chance to get out to Curt Gowdy-just west of Cheyenne- the weekend for some mountain biking. This weather is fabulous and totally out of character.
I’m dying to go to Curt Gowdy– I’ve heard so much about it and it’s only like a 70 min drive from me. Hopefully this summer!!
Ya… I wouldn’t want a broken head either. I did my first mountain biking trip in Tahoe last year. I loved it. But it does take a mountain biking nerve to go thru some parts. On our trip back, I finally had some balance in my ride. So, it was a lot more fun. Thinking about hitting it up again this year.
Looks like a great ride. A day in nature… anytime! Sorry you got hurt. Sorry you don’t have a courageous story to go with it since it happened after the ride. π
Yeah, I kinda like to keep my head in one piece… it’s a lifelong goal π
Looks like you guys had a great time! I’m glad you were finally able to find each other!
It was 75 degrees here in Western New York but now it is back to the normal 40 degree temperatures that we typically see at the end of March. Oh well it was fun while it lasted!
Congrats on your relay– you little speedster! You ladies did great!!
Wow, that trail looks amazing! the first time I rode, was on a hard technical train which resulted in stitches at the end of the day π , it was great fun and I think I’m ready to go back out but, I might take it slow and easy.
Heather you are so hardcore – blood and mud! I love it. I am so mountain bike rusty – I’d be nervous too but you were tackling those rocks!!!!
so much fun!
Congrats to Elle!
love a healthy sense of bribery π you are a freaking rock star. this looks like the craziest most awesome adventure ever!!!!!
I’ve run Lair O’ the Bear many time and it is not easy running, I can’t imagine riding a mt. bike on that stuff. Tough stuff, nice job lady! Enjoy the week…could we ask for any better weather?!?! Well, the wind could leave…
That is a hardcore ride! I don’t know how you do it, but glad you had fun! Love the pic of you in the trees.
Looks like a great ride! And I’m not going to lie – I am so glad you got off and walked a few areas, makes me feel less wimpy! I especially hate extremely rocky areas {similar to what Craig biked down} because all I imagine is my tires slipping on the rock and me going down to have face meet rock. Not cool!
We are yet to make it up to that area but I’m thinking its going on our list of places to check out! We had some dicey experiences trying out new mtn biking places when we first moved here in July so once we found Buffalo Creek we stuck with it…should probably expand our horizons this year!
Looks like you had an awesome time! The trail looks sooooo nice! It’s warmer here today (about +6). Went out for a run this morning…included a little bit of trail action π (No blood or scrapes were had lol).
