Moving to the Music

Let me preface this with a story. I went to spin class last night and it was a new night for me. Not that I have a spin schedule, but I guess I typically don’t ride on Wednesday nights. Anyway, I went and the class had a male instructor which I was originally excited for because I’ve only taken spin from gals. I thought it would be fun to try something new.

Fail.

Before anyone gets sassy, I’m not saying that it was bad because he was a guy. The largest problem with the class (for me) was that he absolutely did not understand the importance of music and its correlation with spin class. First of all, he chose all this classic rock that I typically love, but that isn’t very good for spin. It was kind of slow. Second of all, he kept turning the volume down super low so he could talk to us, but then he would not turn it back up. You could barely hear the music while spinning. Last but definitely not least, he didn’t correspond the workout cadence to the beat of the music. WTF?

For those of you that haven’t taken spin before, I feel like that last point is pretty important. Typically instructors will pick a slower song for a tough, uphill climb so you can match your slower cadence to the slower beat. Likewise, they’ll pick some crazy fast song for intervals so you can get pumped up and make your legs fly. For me, this is the draw of spin class. Otherwise, I’ll just sit on my trainer at home by myself!

After class, I was thinking about this and I realized that perhaps it is just me. Maybe music is a crucial component to my workouts (because yes, I struggle to run without music as well), but maybe that isn’t the case for many people. All of my friends workout with iPods so I don’t have much to compare it to. Sooooooooooooooo……

I’m taking a poll here!

Do you workout with music? All workouts, or does it depend on the activity?

I love spin class! I started about 3 years ago and there was a specific beginners spin that I did for a few months to rly get it down. Then I branched out to the harder longer classes. By far loud good music does it for me. It’s hard to push yourself with boring quiet music. I totally agree that the instructor and the music MATTERS.
