My Beloved State is Burning

I will keep this short and sweet (which I am sure you’ll appreciate after all of my recent long-winded posts!)

I am sure that y’all have seen on the news or read in the papers that the wildfire situation out here is out of control. The sad truth is that it absolutely is not media hype and the situation is pretty extreme. In my 30 years in Colorado, I have never seen the summer fire season get this hot, this large, and this out-of-control so fast. We just had four or five days in a row with temps in the triple digits– triple digits in June?? In Colorado?? Usually we have a fire season in the summer, but nothing quite like this.

The Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs is the most severe, but there are multiple others burning throughout the state. To make matters worse, there were 51 lightning strikes in Boulder yesterday that led to multiple grass fires. Although the fire crews were able to put out or contain most of them, there is one fire still blazing at present: The Flagstaff Fire. Currently, it’s at zero containment and it makes me worry about it potentially running into the city of Boulder.

I actually live just outside of Boulder, so I want to make it clear that I am in no danger. (Thanks to everyone who has called, texted, tweeted, and emailed me to check in!) However, these wildfires are saddening me more than you can realize. Buildings are burning, animals are terrified, and people are being relocated away from their homes with no idea whether or not they will ever see them again.

In short, my beloved state is burning. Please keep your fingers crossed, send good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, whatever you do….because we need some serious rain.

Definitely in my thoughts. My family has been out to CO twice to run Pikes Peak, and that area is near and dear to our hearts. It’s sad to see what is happening. Stay safe!

I drove up to Eldorado Springs Road last night and saw the flames on the east side of the ridge. Devastating. That’s our playground!!

Lots of positive thoughts being sent Colorado’s way. What an insane situation out there, wishing that state all the best!

Definitely praying for safety, relief, and containment. Very sad here in Denver watching everything going on, wishing I could do more…maybe open up my house for anyone evacuating?

I’ve been thinking about what I can do afterwards when we’ll have a bunch of dead and burned forests….not quite sure yet 🙁

It’s really sad and devastating. I was just in CO, we were evacuated on Sunday morning due to the Waldo Fire. (as we were packing to leave.) It’s been crazy to see how much it has spread and how fast. Definitely keeping Colorado in my thoughts!

So so sorry! A friend of mine’s dad is 2 miles from the blaze and she is a bit worried. Praying it is contained!

It is very sad. I know so many people impacted. Many areas where I learned to love the outdoors are beeing destroyed 🙁

Praying for your BEAUTIFUL state and for all of those that have been devastated by this.

Just so incredibly sad! Some friends are pretty sure they lost their house in Colorado Springs :(. Stay safe girl…the air quality is so bad in places around Boulder I hear. Nasty stuff.

We are having very similar issues in Utah, but thankfully most of the fires have stayed away from homes. We did have someone die in one of our fires though. Horrible! I’ve been watching the news and the photos that I keep seeing from that Colorado fire are just intense and insane. Here’s hoping for rain and SOON!

Such craziness with the fire. I am glad you and my parents and sister are not near the fire. I hope it stays that way. I just feel so bad for all of those people evacuating their homes. I hope the state and those poor firefighters get some relief from the heat soon.

I was in grad school in San Diego the year (2007) that southern California was on fire and at one point, was surrounded on three sides by two of the bigggest fires. I hear ya there… Thinking of you — stay safe!

Stay safe. I’ve been constantly thinking of my Colorado friends, Tweeps, and favorite companies out there and I feel so unbelievably helpless out here in NH. Wish I could do something!

I’ll keep doing the rain dance as much as I can!

It makes me so sad. Such an incredibly beautiful state and I hate to see it damaged. Not to mention the danger to people and their homes. Fingers crossed for some relief.

Terrible! I’m glad you are safe but I will be praying for some rain for Colorado!

Was thinking of you when I first heard about the Flagstaff Fire. So scary. Glad you’re safe but seriously hoping for some rain. And less wind. And fewer lightening strikes!

We got about 30 minutes of steady rain in Belmar today and it looked dark to the north, seriously hoping y’all got some rain up there!

We got a smidge but really all it did was produce enough lightning to start a few more grass fires 🙁 Lukcily, the smidge did drop the temps a bit and last night they had the fire 30% contained, which is much better than 0%. If only the Waldo Canyon Fire would be the same!

It makes me so sad to see all this! I agree, I’ve been in colorado all my life, and never have I seen this much fire/this bad/fast/etc. And if it’s already in the triple digits in June, I can’t imagine what July and August are going to be like,

I hope the whole state gets like a solid week of rain! That smoke in the air is awful and it’s even worse when people are losing their homes. When we had fires here, it was in a swamp and no one lived there, so it was just the smoke.
