My Internal Shoe Debate

As a lot of you saw on my Daily Mile account, I had my longest run to date on Sunday: 10 whole miles. The way I see it, there is good and bad to that. Ten whole miles is TEN FREAKING MILES, and I totally stand by that. However, that was the last long run….because you know what is this Sunday?

Holy cow! I gotta tell you– this sucker really crept up on me! Note to self: never, EVER plan a race smack in the middle of busy season at work!!

Anyway, back to the ten miles.

The run wasn’t bad, but it definitely was not as effortless as last Sunday’s 9 miler. First of all, there is the obvious: it was a mile longer. Duh. But you know, I don’t think that was it.

Secondly, there was even more elevation gain than the week before. According to my Garmin stats, I covered 1152 feet of elevation gain over my 10 mile run. Seriously, where the hell am I running, the Rockies or something?! And that wasn’t a trail run, mind you. That was just around town! 🙂

Lastly, I swapped out my shoes for this run and wore my Brooks Adrenalines instead of my Pure Cadence. As I’ve mentioned, I’m completely in love with my Pure Cadence and really enjoy the lightness I get from only having a 4mm drop. Real or not, I truly feel like these shoes make running easier for me!

Having said that, I took a risk in running 9 miles in them two weeks ago (previous runs had only been 4-5 miles) and my legs were kinda tired afterwards. In particular, my knees were a bit sore. Nothing major, and it went away by the next day, but I attributed the tenderness to the minimal drop and decided to switch to the Adrenalines for the 10-miler this past weekend.

Negative. Soreness was still there, only now my feet felt SUPER heavy because of the additional weight! Whining, I know, but I truly noticed the extra couple of ounces, I swear! My legs were also crazy sore on Monday, particularly in the quads. Like, seriously sore. Unfortunately, I don’t know if it’s because of the shoe issue or because of the 1152 feet in elevation gain issues. Sigh.

Sooooooo…. I’m stuck. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHICH SHOES TO WEAR ON SUNDAY. And yes, this is the type of first-world problem that I deal with 🙂 Can you fix it for me?!

In other news…. guys, I’m a failure. In regards to my barista drama, I dropped the ball yesterday. I chickened out. I got overwhelmed. I bailed. I flew the coop. Whatever other excuse/cliche expression you can think of, I did it!
Well, kind of. I got to the coffee shop early for the employee eval, purchased my three damn coffees, but then work stuff blew up and I spent the next hour putting out fires (yes, at 7am) After that was all said and done, I had to head into the office and I just didn’t feel like dealing with more drama. I kinda feel like this was my last opportunity because next week will be too far after the fact, so I guess I’m going to let it slide.
What a wimp.

Do you have an opinion of my shoe debate?
More than likely, I’ll do what I want anyway, but I’m very curious to hear what y’all think! 🙂
Are you disappointed in me for my confrontational failure?!

Who else is running/racing/whatever this weekend?
I hate to say racing… because, we all know I don’t really race, in the literally sense. I like to refer to it as “paying to run with thousands of others.” 🙂

Great job on the 10 mile run! I bet that half marathon course is going to be beautiful.

I avoid confrontation. But in my mind I always win so there is that I guess….I do not have an answer about the shoes. Probably should wear what ever one you think will do the best job and keep you moving. Have fun at the half! I ran this full back in 2006. The full was a beast with so much downhill but the half looks like it will be nice. Good Luck!

I’ve heard the drop for the full is a lot worse than the half, but I’m hoping the gradual downhill makes this …. *cough cough* easy on me?!

Shriek – I’m excited for your race this weekend! I was going to do the full until I had to have surgery I can’t wait to hear all about it! I would wear the Pure Cadence if you like them more. Sure, they might make you more sore afterwards, but by that point the race will be over. Wait, is that TERRIBLE logic? Ha! Good luck!

Its because of the hills, hills cause havoc on the quads

Good luck this weekend! I wish you were able to go to the Blend Retreat, but this race should be great. I can’t wait to hear/read about it because I’m really thinking of doing it next year. Oh, and I would go with whichever shoe makes you more comfy. You are going to be going downhill anyway.

Enjoy our half! I’m prepping for my first 10k race taking place at the end of May 🙂

Good luck on your half this weekend! I would wear whichever shoes you feel most comfortable in. I’m going to be running a half this weekend too, and I’ll most likely wear my Brooks Adrenalines. I have the Pure Cadence too, but my body (mostly my calves) are slow to accept them for longer runs. But one day, I hope they can become my “racing” shoes!

The weird thing for me with the Pure Cadence is that there was zero transition time for them– they never made me sore or tired or anything from the start, and never caused any problems for my calves– just that knee soreness after 9 miles. BUT I LOVE THOSE SHOES!

Good luck with your half this weekend!!! Good news- you can see the Derby since it’s on in the late afternoon 🙂
I don’t know what to tell you about the shoes… I’ve been running in the same kind for years 🙂 I’m hesitant to even try another brand because of soreness!

I can’t tell you about the shoes either but I would go with the ones that are the most comfortable.

    Good luck this weekend!

    1) Wear the Pure Connect. I totally understand the difference a few ounces makes. You’ll be happy you did.

    2) Not disappointed – I’m pretty wimpy too, my bark is definitely bigger than my bite.

    3) I AM RACING! We’ll be half marathon virtual buddies!

I am going to second this….the lighter shoes – as they are the ones you’ve been doing most runs for – for a half will be worth it.

Do the Pure Cadence bother you DURING the run? If not, and it is only tired legs afterward, I would go with them. So much of success in long races is mental so if you feel better in the Pure Cadence, I say wear ’em!

  • Reply Alyssa at

Well I vetoed narking on the rude barista in the first place so I’m happy with the result, haha! I guess all my years on the other side gave me compassion for her. I’m racing Sunday too! A half marathon! I’ll be thinking of you, you’ll do great! I say wear the lighter shoes, if you had the same pain with both, it sounds like those felt better overall.

Good luck this weekend! You’re going to rock it!

  • Reply Jamie at

Good luck this weekend! I can’t wait to hear how it goes! I would wear the Pure Cadence, 4mm drop isn’t that bad for a half marathon. That’s what both of my shoes have and I’ve wore one of my pairs for my half marathons.
