Just a Colorado Gal

Oakley Women’s Commit Sunglasses

In Colorado, we have a rule about playing outdoors. In short, you never, ever go outside during daylight hours without your sunglasses. It doesn’t matter if it is the dead heat of July or the *hopefully* snowy and cold temps of January. The high altitude of my beloved state means that the 300 days of sunshine each year are even more extreme than in other parts of the country.Don’t believe me? Ask an old-timer who has lived here since the early 60s. I’m willing to bet that you’ll notice the yellow tinge on the whites of his eyes because they didn’t quite have the same eyewear that we have now. Luckily, my mom ingrained this lesson in me from an early age. As an adult, I’ve always been very careful with my eyes and I am willing to spend the extra money on good sunglasses. After all, I only have two eyeballs!

Because of this, I was psyched when Jess from Sunglasses Shop contacted me to test a pair of sunglasses. I have been looking for a second pair to work into my outdoor rotation with the Oakleys my sister got me for my birthday last year. I like to use running glasses during my all of my outdoor activities because they can typically withstand a beating and don’t bounce all over my face. These are both key elements if the glasses are coming into the backcountry with me.

Per Jess’s recommendation, I chose the Oakley Women’s Commit sunglasses. It was a tough choice since Sunglasses Shop carries every pair of shades imaginable, but I took her advice since she is a marathoner herself. Plus, I have always had a lot of luck with Oakley sunglasses (including my ski goggles). If it isn’t broke, you don’t fix it, right?

Love how reflective the lenses are!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve tested the Commit glasses out while trail running, hiking, driving, and snowshoeing. In short, I’ve run them through the gamut of activities that a lens needs to withstand in order to remain in my life. Final verdict? These are one of the best sunglasses I’ve ever owned. Period.

The Good: The lens itself is fantastic and the clarity is pretty darn amazing. Additionally, the lenses are enhanced with Oakley Hydrophobic which is a coating that supposedly repels dust while maintaining a smudge-resistant barrier. I’m always pushing my glasses from my face to the top of my head and then back again, so I typically collect a ridiculous amount of smudges on a daily basis. While I definitely still smudged these a few times, I noticed that it was significantly less. I also liked the fact that the nose pieces don’t grab my hair when I push the lenses onto my head. Not that I style my hair that often, but when I do, I prefer that my sunglasses don’t get all tangled up in it!

Additionally, these suckers do not bounce! One of my biggest pet peeves in running glasses (along with the majority of the population, I’m sure) is when the frame bounces on your nose while running or hiking. That drives me bonkers. Luckily, these do no such thing and that makes me happy! Finally, I definitely need to point out that these lenses don’t smash my eyelashes like I’ve experienced so frequently with past shades. I have abnormally long eyelashes (I even cut them when I was little girl because so many people asked me if they were fake!) and struggle to find glasses that don’t press against them. I don’t know if it’s Oakleys Three-Point Fit that affords my lashes the space, but regardless, I’m thankful. Also, did I mention that they don’t fog up at all? Not once!

The Not-So-Good: Surprisingly, I don’t have anything negative to say about the Commit glasses! At first, I was a little unsure of the Freshwater color since it is a bit flashier than my usual black or brown, but I’ve even grown to love that. Y’all, these are seriously great sunglasses!

What is your biggest annoyance with sunglasses?
It’s a toss up between the smashing of my eyelashes and the bouncing on my nose. Often, I can curb the bouncing by pushing them further up the bridge of my nose, but then they smash my lashes even more. It’s a vicious cycle!
