Do you ever go to a class at the gym and find someone there that absolutely drives you nuts? I’ve found one at my gym and unfortunately, we seem to be on the identical workout schedule. I ran into her again last night during spin, and I pretty much wanted to throw my water bottle at her throughout the entire class.

I know, that would not have been a demonstration in good gym etiquette. But let me explain!
I first encountered this chica about a month ago during a different spin class. Ever since, I’ve managed to run into her during at least one class each week. And every time, it’s always the same. Spin starts at 6:30; she saunters in at 6:35-6:40, which in itself, is a pet peeve of mine. I strongly dislike lateness, but I get it–maybe she gets out of work late and that’s the best she can do. Moving on.

But even worse? She makes a point of ALWAYS strolling into our in-progress class while gabbing on her cell phone. She doesn’t make any pretenses of hanging up, and will literally sit there, standing next to her spin bike, chatting with her homie in the middle of the class while we are all sweating our faces off! And don’t worry–she makes sure to raise her voice so that she can be heard over the music blasting in the classroom. In short, she’s pretty much shouting into the phone. AGH!
After that, she usually wanders out of class to fill up her water bottle, and comes back in around 6:45-6:50 and decides to bless us by joining the class and getting on the bike. But the final straw? Once she does get on her spin bike, she literally does not follow the instructor’s lead by any stretch of the imagination. If the instructor says to crank the gears and climb a hill, she drops her gears and starts doing interval sprints. If the instructor does a song full of bike jumps, she’ll take that time to crank out a mountain climb. I get that each workout is your own and you should scale it to how you are feeling. But I have to wonder, why does this lady even come to class???
Clearly, my workout last night was spin! What was yours??

That is not cool at all. Why does she even bother to come to class. I think she should wait until class is over and do her own spin workout. It sounds like she is doing that anyway so why disrupt an entire class!
My workout yesterday was on the elliptical as it has been for several weeks. I can’t wait until my recovery period is over!
I am not getting why she is even coming to class. I think the talking on the phone would be the most annoying part!
That is seriously annoying! Maybe one of those things would be excusable but all of them?! Just plain stupid rude. Honestly, the instructor should say something to her. At my old gym we had a big sign on the door that said “no cell phones”, maybe your class needs this – at least the instructor would be able to say “Um, read the sign woman”!
Oooh so annoying! I won’t even go into a class if I’m late. I think it’s really disruptive and to talk on your phone in a class-that’s a little over the top!
When I took martial arts, if you were late, then you had to do a push up for every minute you were late. You also had to stand in the doorway until the Sifu nodded at you to enter. Maybe your spin class needs to be more like that. 🙂
Here;s the deal. You arne’t over reacting….but wouldn’t it be awesome if you weren’t reacting at all???
People sometimes piss me off too but then I find that maybe me being pissed off, focusing on them instead of me is wasting my time! You probably could’ve had a GREAT time in your class if instead of hating her you just changed your perspective around….try pitying her next time. She;s the one paying money and not doing the class.
BETTER yet, if you have the balls to do why not clamy ask her why she is on her cell during class….maybe it’s b/c she isn’t social, can’t meet friends easily but is an extrovert that NEEDS to have someone there all the time.
I don;t know. I always just ask people. you’d be surprised at what you find out if you ask nicely.
Sometimes I get sooooo angry at some one for something their doing but then when I tell them it hurts my feelings, bothers me or ask them why the answer nearly ALWAYS blows me away and I am left wondering why I was even pissed to begin /w 🙂
but blogs are for venting so yes, she is a bitch, completely rude and probably is just ignorant!.
My argument is why care! 😀 just SPIN!!!!
The cell phone thing would seriously vex me. My spin class cohorts (and I go to two different rec centers) are pretty respectful. It’s the instructor at one of them who drives me crazy. :^)
I totally feel you on that one! I wrote a vent entry about annoying people in my BodyPump classes one day because I was so irked and couldn’t decide if I was just in a bitchy mood. She’s killing the mood and distracting the whole class.
Happier thoughts, any recs on how to start in spin? It seems so intense, but I’m so intimidated by it.
Ugh!!! This DRIVES ME NUTS!!! Biggest reason why I avoid spin class, My gym has a rule, no one is allowed in after the class starts. Its enforced, the instructors tell them to get out if they come in late, argue with the instructor about it and get banned from all futire spin classes, maybe send an unsigned letter to your gym asking them to consider this policy.
I hate when people are doing their own thing, they are taking a spot from someone who wanted to be part of the class, ticks me off as well.
Got my blood going now
I get the lateness, MAYBE if she cannot get there any faster, although I also am very keen on punctuality. To have all of these things happen every time though. OMG, why not just wait till class is over to do your own spin, or find a bike somewhere else. Or perhaps even find a spin class that better suits your schedule, c’mon!
As for my workout, yesterday I did a spinning class and a core class. 🙂
Anyway, thought I would comment since I just started reading your blog. 🙂 I am also a Colorado girl!! Loving the weather today!
