Starting Some Controversy

Alright, I’m jumping in, head first.

Have any of you read this article yet? If not, take a sec and go read it…. I’ll wait.

Don’t worry; I didn’t dress up for you while waiting! This is an absolutely ridiculous picture of me last year on Halloween. I know, I know, I’m so lucky cause very few people can actually pull this look off, but I think the glasses truly add a little something, don’t you? I was part of a rock band, DUH!

Anyway, my point is that this is an acceptable (albeit humiliating) Halloween costume. I didn’t hurt anyone (other than my own future dating prospects) and in my opinion, that should be what Halloween costumes are all about. But now we have this:

Yes, chica there is quite the hotty and she has some serious boobs. But the part about this whole costume that really pisses me off is the name: Anna Rexia.

I’m not laughing.

On it’s own, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this costume, assuming you remove the damn measuring tape wrapped around her waist. She just looks like a sexy skeleton (is that an oxymoron or something?!) and let’s face it: sexy Halloween costumes are nothing new. I saw a sexy Teletubby last year and about peed myself. So sexy is in; a sexy skeleton would be fine.

But naming the costume Anna Rexia? Seriously, that’s not funny at all. Why go there? Why did the creator of this costume have to take that one large step right over the line and make this costume inappropriate, and in my opinion, downright mean? Is this the kind of stuff that we find funny as a society? Or am I just too sensitive? I’ve never battled an eating disorder, nor do I know anyone who has. I’m not personally attached to this issue in any way. And if something offends my liberal, usually goes-with-the-flow mentality, I think it must be pretty bad. It was just unnecessary.

Like how that’s all sparkly? I’ve hit a new technological high point here at WTME!

However, I thought about it even more. We have Halloween costumes every year that depict murderers and convicts.

 Just saying.

Even more, how often can you step into a Halloween shop without spying at least ONE costume that is representing  obesity in some way? Whether it’s a sumo wrestler:

Or something a little more generic:

It could be argued that those costumes are merely depicting overweight people, so could the same rule apply to the Anna Rexia costume? Or is it possible that we are just desensitized to the obesity side of the argument because it is such a prevalent problem in this country? I don’t hear (or at least not very loudly) anyone proclaiming the removal of these costumes from the shelves.

 So what’s the difference??

And yes, that is a real question! Where do you stand on this controversy? Should the Anna Rexia costume be pulled? What about all the other costumes in the world that represent something shameful or unpleasant?
