That Time I Ran in a Sports Bra

WHAT?! Is my blog turning into a strip show?!

Haha, not likely, but I will admit that I’m going to show a bit more skin in this post than I ever have before!

It started yesterday when I decided to take my crazy pup on a nice 5k run. The sun was shining and it was seriously the perfect day to get out and enjoy the weather with Tals. I had planned to take the roadie out, but my cycling partner fell through and I wasn’t in the mood to spend hours pedaling all by my lonesome. Such a rough life I lead!

This was the grin Tals had on her face before the run….I should have know then!

Anyway, we got a mile out and Tals was dying because of the warm sunshine. Being the lovable dog owner I am, I decided I would let her take a drink from this muddy and algae-covered pond in the field.

(Are you seeing where this is going already?)

I walked her down to the edge of the pond and she started lapping up the good stuff. I kinda quit paying attention and while I was holding her on a locked leash, I wasn’t even looking at her since she was so preoccupied with rehydrating herself. Yeah, that was my mistake!

Apparently, some idiot duck decided to swim in the pond, right in front of Tally’s eyeballs. Naturally, because she is Tally and lives to make me suffer, she took off and LUNGED at the duck, determined to eat it!

Luckily, she didn’t get the duck because I had her on a locked leash. Unluckily, she completely pulled me into the pond!

Since I hadn’t been paying attention, I totally fell into the water sideways, covering myself with algae and mud. Actually, I’m pretty sure the only part of me that didn’t go in was my left arm….skills, my friends. Skills.

After some serious cursing and yanking and thoughts of “Wow, I want to beat my dog!”, Tals and I got out of the pond and surveyed the damage. I was a hot mess, covered in mud and totally smelling awful. SERIOUSLY glad that no one saw this!!

Long story not-so-short, I decided that it was far easier to take off my shirt and run in my bra instead of dripping mud and algae all over the place. Damnit, I wanted to finish my route!

After I got home, with the mud all washed off 🙂

After I got home, I thought this whole day through. I’m not a self-conscious individual (years of dancing in skintight spandex will rid you of that REALLY fast!), but I’m also not super flashy. I don’t wear clothing that shows a lot and I have never, ever run in just a sports bra. No, I know I’m not fat but it’s just not something I feel comfortable with.

However, I realized yesterday that I’m kind of over that. Am I overweight? Nope. Do I have the most amazing body ever? Hell no. But am I comfortable with who I am and how I’m built? Sure looks like it! Now, I’m not gonna go sprinting all over town half dressed and I doubt this will become a frequent occurrence, but it sure was a lesson in regards to my own self-esteem!

Looks like I owe my furball of a dog a  big ol’ thank you 🙂

In the summer I ALWAYS run in just shorts/bra – if people don’t like it, too bad for them!

Oh I LOVE that this little escapade turned into a learning moment for you! How fun is that? I dig that you are confident being you, with a tank top or without — that’s real confidence if you ask me! I have YET to run in a sports bra myself but its on my list to conquer this summer!! I WILL DO THIS!

Admittedly, I’m way, way too self-conscious to let the world see my tummy. I’d love to get past it at some point soon, though! Kudos to you for being a strong, confident gal.

Great post! Running (and fitness in general) should be about inner beauty and healthy. Good for you for flaunting your confidence!!

I actually think I did run in a sports bra…once. But it was 5am, pitch black, hot as heck outside, in the middle of summer. No matter how hard I work out or what I eat I always have a pooch. An although I’m working to embrace my curves I have issue with them and have never been comfortable even in a bikini. Yeah, I have issues. 😉 Good for you for not caring and going for it!

loved this post! aren’t dogs the best 🙂 you’re rockin’ that sports bra!

girl – you’ve got great abs! i love Tals stories – never a dull moment, huh? 🙂

I’m sorry, but I am forever laughing hysterically at your poor Tals mishaps! After horseback riding today mom as complaining about the abuse to the girly bits, which I then called a cookie, next I had to explain how I heard about cookie {you & your broken cookie} and I was laughing all over again… Makes me want a dog and dread the idea of one all at the same time!

PS – you’ve got great abs, just wait til long runs in July – you may end up flaunting them a few more times! 😉

Bahahaha! I love that you’re using the cookie phrase!!!

I thought about that–20 miles in August may equal a sports bra, regardless of how comfy I am!

I run in a sports bra all the time hahaha

Yikes! Yup, you didn’t have a choice. Consolation? At least it wasn’t a white sports bra …

Oh TallyWally, what a little heathen she is. Thank goodness Callie and Sumo are pint-sized, or that kind of crap would happen to me all the time!

I run in a sports bra and shorts from Spring till Fall if I’m outside. It feel ways too good not to! But I also grew up running around outside in the country with only panties on…..so I’ve never really been acquainted with modesty!

I used to run in a sports bra years ago…I haven’t in a while. Part of the reason is like you said – it’s not that I’m uncomfortable with my body or embarrassed – just don’t want to seem flashy. Maybe after baby #2 I will start =)
PS. You look fantastic! You should run shirtless more often!!!

lol – If I had your abs, I would feel just fine about running in a sports bra…. Unfortunately, after two kids and dipping over into the 40+ category, and not being particularly blessed with thin genes, I would have to say it would have to be blisteringly hot for me to peel off my shirt. 🙂

  • Reply mymarblerye at

HOLY SH*T. If I had abs like that I would wear that sh*t to the mall!

I finished my Warrior Dash on Saturday with just my sports bra on — I never ever ever run in just a bra, but it’s… free-ing. Will I do it again? Probably not. 🙂

If you’ve got the bod, GO FOR IT! As a senior in high school I started the sports bra movement on my track team. It was very shocking (why? I don’t know!) but I told folks if the boys could run with their shirts off so could we. Sadly I am not in that kind of shape any more so no sports bra running for me!

So go for it! Work on a tan and enjoy your runs!

Eeehhh, wish I could’ve seen you run by me, fagetaboutit! Joey thinks you look fantastic you know? Eehhhh

I like this bra. I chose this rating because it is a good bra that fits well.
I like that it holds me while I am exercising.
I would recommend bali minimizer bras .
