The Marathon That Wasn’t

Let’s talk about the knee.

Guys, I have some sad news. And, if you read me regularly or follow me on DailyMile, I am sure that this comes as no surprise in light of my wicked abysmal mileage. I’m shooting for 10 miles this week and I’ll be thrilled!

My point? The Denver Rock ‘n Roll marathon is out. Of course, I am already registered and September 22 has been blocked out on my calendar for months. However, this knee stuff really jacked up my training. I got as far as 16 mile runs back in late July and was so proud of myself that I was ahead of schedule and going into the marathon extra prepared. But then, GTIS happened.

I went to the doctor last week and finally received some medical advice. They took some Xrays straight off to make sure that I didn’t have any fractures hanging out. Luckily, my bones are nice and sturdy!

Not a crack to be found!

However, that didn’t explain  my knee pain. The doc told me to take the rest of the week off of everything other than cycling (rowing got kicked out also!) and then try a test run on Sunday. I was convinced that my knee would be excruciating still since that had been the previous pattern, but miraculously, the shooting pain had stopped!

I’ve tentatively started re-using it this week but my runs are no longer than 2 miles at a time. While the shooting pain in my knee has disappeared, the aches are still very noticeable. Even as I sit here and type, I can “feel” my left knee. Does that make any sense?

The doc also told me that an MRI may be order this week if the pain continued. Since the stabs seemed to have stopped, I haven’t gone in for a second visit, and am really starting to believe that I just severely pulled a tendon in my knee. I’m taking it easy for the rest of the week to see if the pain continues to subside. I’m thinking that I’m finally on the mending path, which makes me very happy!

This doesn’t pertain in the least…but I bought new snowpants for ski season and I LOVE them! And, I needed another picture 🙂

However, it does mean that a marathon is most definitely not in the cards right now. I can’t even run 3-4 miles, let alone 26.2! It makes me sad, and I am very disappointed. I spent so much of my summer invested in this damn race and it is very frustrating to just watch it disappear. I could handle it better if I DNF’d the race, but I’m not even getting to toe the starting line. Major bummer.

You know what this does mean though? I’m skipping the 26.2 mile distance entirely. Instead, I’m going to be jumping from 13.1 miles to 29.2 without a single marathon in between. Originally, RnR Denver was going to be my entrance into 20+ mile runs and act as a prep distance for Haiti in January. Obviously, that’s not going to happen, and with me starting from scratch in October, another marathon between now and January is a big fat negative. Sigh.

You know what would probably help make me feel better about this? A donation to my Haiti fund 🙂 I am seriously SO CLOSE y’all. I know this link doesn’t show it (lots of my other donations were via the website), but I’m within $150 of my total goal. And it would for reals make me feel better about missing my first marathon. Don’t you want to make me smile?!

Share…how many DNS (did not start) races have you had in your life?
This will be my third this year! I didn’t start a snowshoe race last November because of an asthma attack, and I chose to run on my own instead of doing a local half marathon this past July.

Like my snowpants?!
