I read an article recently on the never-ending controversy and debate surrounding iPods in both recreational activity and in races. Kinda made me think about where I stand in the debate. Near as I can tell, there seems to be two glaring opinions:
- No iPod. Advocates on this side of things argue that if you can’t keep yourself entertained with your own thoughts/the beautiful sights around you while on a hike, bike, or run, then you have other issues. Safety is also argued, most specifically in skiing and cycling where the lack of hearing can cause accidents.
- Pro iPod. The music gets you going, amps you up, and allows you to better enjoy whatever activity you are participating in,
I’ve gotta say that I am more likely on the pro-music side of the divide, but I am certainly torn. I absolutely hate running without any music, and I definitely like to crank the tunes when I’m carving fresh powder. It gets me feeling energized and ready to move! I won’t, however, ever cycle with music, particularly on my roadie. I thinks its crucial to my safety to be able to hear the traffic around me and I definitely agree that music would jeopardize that. Hiking can go both ways for me. If I’m doing a multi-day trek, its nice to have my iPod with me in case I need a boost of motivation on day 3….but it’s also nice to sit back and enjoy the sounds of Mother Nature. Geez, I’m really wishy washy 🙂
Big anouncement as well….I’ve decided that next year (2011) will be the year that I finally attempt a half-Ironman! Yes, I said a half because I am certainly not able to go for the full just yet 🙂 I’m looking at the Harvest Moon here in Colorado. It’s in September so I would have the entire summer to train. A friend sent me a fairly detailed plan he used to train for it, and it definitely made me nervous just looking at it….lots and lots of workouts are in my future!
