Trail Running for Turkey at 10,000 Feet

How was everyone’s Turkey Day (for my American friends, naturally)? I forgot to mention this, but I headed over to the Western Slope on Wednesday afternoon to spend the rest of the holiday weekend at my parents’ cabin. There really is nothing better than time with your family and friends in the mountains!

The stream on the property. Love this place!
Mom had already taken care of the prep work for dinner so we had the majority of yesterday morning free for playtime. Dad turned on the Lions game and prepared for the annual beat down while Mom, Will and I headed up the Mesa for some trail running. You may remember this trail from my visit last month, but it sure looked different yesterday!
Mom, Tals, and me around 10,000 feet

Will and me at the trailhead
The Grand Mesa has received some snow in the past couple of weeks and although there is nowhere near as much as we need, it was nice to have a light covering. The sun was shining though, so we were still able to wear minimal clothing! Plus, the warm temps were gradually melting the snow so the trail run was a mash-up of mud and slippery slush. Talk about some serious fun!

I stuck with mom for the run just because I still don’t think it’s a good idea to let my 56-year-old mother go trail running at 10,000 feet by herself. Plus, let’s face it: there is absolutely no way I could keep up with this beast of a man.
Pretty sure Toyota will be knocking on Will’s door any day now to make this an ad
Yes, he finished the 3.5 mile run much quicker than mom and me and decided to cap off his run with some strength training back at the truck. I don’t think Will suspected that I am actually a creeper photographer that lurks in the bushes in order to capture these artistic workout photos 🙂

After the run, the three of us headed back down the mountain to get ready for dinner. Somehow, I managed to run out of time and celebrated Thanksgiving in that exact running outfit you see above… complete with mud splatters up the back of my legs. Le sigh. At least my family is used to my sense of fashion!
The highlight of dinner? Will and I got adventurous and made these babies for dessert:
Yes, another one of my fantastically blurry iPhones. Will even bought me an iPhone 5 and I still suck!
Apple pie baked in the apple. So delightful and yummy! We differed on the appropriate amount of crust but you guys would die if you saw how Will’s massive crust-covered apple turned out. The dough swelled so much while baking that it knocked over the apple and the dough started to cover the entire baking dish! In fact, it truly looked like he had a massive scone on top of his apple!

How did you celebrate Thanksgiving this year?

Trail running in the snow: yay or nay?

I had to laugh envisioning the crust knocking over the apple and taking over the whole baking tray. Those do look really good!

Trail running in the snow is a big YAY! Jealous of your weather! I want to run in my short sleeves!

I saved him some face and didn’t include the massive buscuit-apple photo, but it was seriously funny :)My stomach hurts from laughing!

Wow, this looks amazing!! I saw some of the pics on IG yesterday but loved reading the post. I absolutely loved running in high altitude when I loved in Colorado but when I went back to visit this summer I definitely noticed how quickly you lose any acclimation to the elevation. It was totally a struggle going from running at sea level to getting a quick run in the mountains.

Altitude can definitely be tough and although I’m very used to it, running at 10k still isn’t “easy” for me! I just stay slow and steady. Will is from Cali and he said he definitely was feeling it!

Gorgeous trails! I’m not sure how I’d fare running at 10K feet, that’s so impressive. Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m sure you’d acclimate eventually 🙂 Happy Turkey Day!

Your outdoor trip looks so beautiful. I know you said it wasn’t as cold as it looks but I still can’t believe your not wearing long sleeves. You’re one tough cookie!

We had a small family gathering and played word games. We love word games!

I’ve never done a trail run. Ever. It’s on my fitness bucket list.

Oh, you definitely should! I think trail running is much better than road running 🙂

I love that you went trail running with your mom. My favorite thing to do with my mom when we are visiting each other is go walking together- she is not a runner. It is nice to be moving together. Hope you had a great turkey day!

Mama is a lot slower than me, but I love that she and my dad both get out there and stay active. I appreciate it so much more then older I get!

Weren’t you freezing in that tank top pic? That looks awesome! I was about to say I don’t love trail running in the snow but then I remembered I signed up for a trail 50K in January. So watch out of some emails begging for advice. I am NOT trying to sound like a creepster because we all know once you go black you never go back but DAMN he’s got a fine body.
