How was everyone’s Turkey Day (for my American friends, naturally)? I forgot to mention this, but I headed over to the Western Slope on Wednesday afternoon to spend the rest of the holiday weekend at my parents’ cabin. There really is nothing better than time with your family and friends in the mountains!
The stream on the property. Love this place!
Mom had already taken care of the prep work for dinner so we had the majority of yesterday morning free for playtime. Dad turned on the Lions game and prepared for the annual beat down while Mom, Will and I headed up the Mesa for some trail running. You may remember this trail from my visit last month, but it sure looked different yesterday!
Mom, Tals, and me around 10,000 feet
Will and me at the trailhead
The Grand Mesa has received some snow in the past couple of weeks and although there is nowhere near as much as we need, it was nice to have a light covering. The sun was shining though, so we were still able to wear minimal clothing! Plus, the warm temps were gradually melting the snow so the trail run was a mash-up of mud and slippery slush. Talk about some serious fun!
I stuck with mom for the run just because I still don’t think it’s a good idea to let my 56-year-old mother go trail running at 10,000 feet by herself. Plus, let’s face it: there is absolutely no way I could keep up with this beast of a man.
Pretty sure Toyota will be knocking on Will’s door any day now to make this an ad
Yes, he finished the 3.5 mile run much quicker than mom and me and decided to cap off his run with some strength training back at the truck. I don’t think Will suspected that I am actually a creeper photographer that lurks in the bushes in order to capture these artistic workout photos 🙂
After the run, the three of us headed back down the mountain to get ready for dinner. Somehow, I managed to run out of time and celebrated Thanksgiving in that exact running outfit you see above… complete with mud splatters up the back of my legs. Le sigh. At least my family is used to my sense of fashion!
The highlight of dinner? Will and I got adventurous and made these babies for dessert:
Yes, another one of my fantastically blurry iPhones. Will even bought me an iPhone 5 and I still suck!
Apple pie baked in the apple. So delightful and yummy! We differed on the appropriate amount of crust but you guys would die if you saw how Will’s massive crust-covered apple turned out. The dough swelled so much while baking that it knocked over the apple and the dough started to cover the entire baking dish! In fact, it truly looked like he had a massive scone on top of his apple!
