Tri tri tri again!

Wasn’t that clever? 🙂

First tri of the season was today and I had a great time! I usually try to get a few in every summer but I kind of took a detour this summer when I promised Angel I would run the half-marathon in June. At any rate, Angel and Cindy joined in on the fun and we headed on down to the Tri for the Cure. It was awesome. It was a great first tri for Angel since it is all women and a very supportive environment, and it was just plain fun. I ended up competing in my actual 25-29 age group while Cindy and Angel stayed in the buddies wave, so we didn’t end up racing together but that was okay. The swim was kinda interesting actually–for the first time ever in a tri, I felt great and the swim wasn’t kicking my ass. Unfortunately, all of the women around me were…literally! It was the first time ever in an open water swim where I seriously felt like the women were slightly kicking and shoving to get you out of the way. I know that sounds crazy but seriously! I understand the typical accidental kicks and smacks that go along with open water swims and masses of people and this wasn’t like that. I’m talking women merging in on me from both side as I try to swim through the middle, consistently swerving to the side to begin a repeating pattern of kicks to my face, etc. In the end, I hung to the outside and stayed out of the chaos entirely. Sure, I probably swam more than necessary but it was worth it to save my face!

The bike went great and I felt good but that isn’t much of a surprise. The bike is always the easiest part for me and it is where I always try to make up a little bit of time. Lord knows, I suck on the run so I need it! I don’t know what it is about the run but it is always so difficult! I just ran the 13.1 in June fine, but a 5k on the end of everything else always schools me. It was great watching Angel finish her race though because she is such a little runner–she got through the swim and bike, but totally excelled at the run and made up major time. She did great and i was so proud of her!
