The day started off with a bang because I picked my car up from the mechanic after a diagnosis of needing new struts. $600 later, I was broke, but at least I had new struts to beat up on the trails this summer…. right?! (Trying to stay positive here!) Anyway, after that mental beat down, I headed down to Denver.
Saturday was gorgeous and with record highs of almost 80, we were all able to wear pretty much whatever we wanted for the run. And… we pretty much did 🙂 I decided against the tutu because I didn’t want to deal with the extra suffering, so I ended up wearing my green Oiselle shorts. Love the shorts, but shortly realized that I could have worn the damn tutu since I wasn’t going to be doing much running. (That’s foreshadowing, in case you wondered!)

Me, Cindy, Craig, and Joey This was Joey’s first ever race!
Since we were all used to much larger races, we got to City Park super early for packet pickup. We absolutely didn’t need to, so we had lots of time to kill wandering around before the start. Not to worry though– we found many things to amuse us. For example:

Cindy and the geese
Backstory: One time, my dear friend Cindy accidentally ran over some geese. Like, they totally didn’t get out of the road and she ran right over them! Ever since, we’ve called her a bird-killer (which is ironic since she is the only veggie of the group!) and tease her mercilessly. In fact, I’m pretty sure these geese told me that they were getting ready to stage a coup d’etat and attack Cindy during her sleep. Pretty sure.
This might have happened also:

Oh, Craig.
Anyway, after amusing ourselves for awhile, we all lined up to start. Craig, Cindy, and I had all registered for the 10k, and Joey was going to do the 5k. It hit 10am, everyone started running, and we were off!
Only, not so much. About .75 miles into the whole thing, my foot started screaming at me! As I mentioned a few weeks back, I’m battling some awesome plantar fasciitis. I had thought I was being reasonable enough by taking the entire last week off from running and rolling my foot out with an iced water bottle. Apparently my tendon had other ideas. Usually, I’m pretty stubborn and I like to think I have a high threshold for pain, but this was brutal. At first I told Cindy that I would just deal with it– after all, it was only 6.2 miles, right? I could cope with anything for an hour!

Yes, the dog is carrying beer!
But then, as I kept running, I realized I was being really stupid, and all in the name of what? An Irish-loving 10k? Call me crazy, but that’s probably not worth it! I mulled this over for a bit, hobbling along my merry way, and around 1.5 miles, I decided to call it. I was going to officially DNF my first ever race. I told Cindy and Craig to head on without me, pulled over to the side, and started walking.
Not gonna lie, I was pissed!
I kept walking because, really, what else could I do? I had to get back to the finish line somehow. Of course, my stubborn streak reared its head back up, and right around 2 miles, I struck a bargain with my foot: if it would just simmer down and let me run a bit more, I would agree to cut out at the 5k instead of completing the entire 10k. Luckily, this race was a looped race, 2 laps for the 10k, so that seemed like an easy compromise. I trotted off and although it hurt, I at least managed to run a whopping 2 of my 3.1 miles! (Small victories, people!)
After I finished, I had some time to kill so I lounged around the sun and watching Joey finish his first EVER 5k around 45 minutes. Craig and Cindy trotted in from their 10k just after an hour (For the record, my official email results put me at 33: XX for the 5k…not terrible considering I walked the middle chunk.) I was very proud of all of my friends, but still… I was cranky.

Blurry, because clearly, Craig is running FAST!:)
In fact, this whole foot thing kind of ruined the rest of my weekend! It put me in a mood on Saturday, and just irritated me on Sunday. I think the frustrating part of this entire PF drama is that there is not a lot I can do. I’m already icing, I’m already using the good ol’ Ibuprofen, and I just ordered The Sock. I was in the process of looking for a pair of more minimal running shoes since my feet feel great in my Pace Gloves, but after the $600 blow with my car, I had originally decided to hold on the shoes. My friends, I think the holding pattern is over. I’m going shoe shopping!

My PT actually said it could take as long as 6 months to get over PF. I’ve been struggling with it for 2 months. Didn’t run for 6 wks. Very very frustrating injury. I hope the sock helps.
AGH! 6 months, seriously?! No time for that! Normally I wouldn’t care and would just ride, swim, etc, but I signed up for allllllllll these running races. No bueno.
Did your PT recommend the Cortisone shots by chance? I’ve had a few mention them to me, but I’m avoiding them :/
I know, I thought I might cry when she told me how long it could really take. The orthopedist I saw suggested the shot. My PT wants that to be a very last resort (and so do I). But, I hear that they really can help. The only prob is that they are masking the pain not fixing the problem.
My PT has been great with giving me exercises to do, lots of stretching and rolling out the foot on a golf ball. She also is supposed to be sending me an article I will share, that shows a new exercise that she showed me last time I saw her. It’s more about strengthening the deeper muscles. And I do hope that sock helps…fingers crossed.
So sorry you are battling pf. I had that a couple years ago luckily it wasn’t too bad and only lasted a month or two, hope you det to feeling better sooon
I really do know how to spell soon I was just having iPad difficulties
Ha, it’s cool 🙂 I’m all over the place when I (try to) type on my Kindle!
Oh man… you poor thing! I’m glad that you listened to your body even though you (like me) didn’t want to. We had a low key weekend, but busy! No races though, for the first time in a month… that changes next week when we run our Shamrock Shuffle 2miler. Then I have a 4 miler the next Saturday too – here’s to front-loading the year of racing?
Andrew bruised the bone in his heel about 2 weeks ago and he has definitely been taking it easy, but it hasn’t seemed to help. He’s considering getting crutches! Might put a huge cramp in our weekend in Moab this weekend, we’ll see. It doesn’t hurt him to ride his bike, so hopefully mountain biking will still be ok.
Like I was just saying above, usually I wouldn’t be as upset about it because I love cycling and mountain biking, etc……but I just registered for 2 half marathons, a full, and a 10k, plus my Oly tri. I don’t have time to just bike 🙂 Hope his foot gets better!!
Sorry to hear about your DNF…happens to everyone
Great weather you are having there! Way to get out and enjoy it…
If you haven’t already talked with Jill (Run with Jill) she has tons of info on PF. So sorry that you are dealing with it. I’ve got a mile case myself which I think is on the mend. I switched to Kinvara’s but now I seem to struggle with very thight claves…..if it’s not one thing it’s another huh?
Thanks for the tip!
Ugh. Injuries suck. No two ways about it. 🙁 I don’t blame you for being pissed about it!! I would too – but I’m glad you were smart and cut out of the race early, not worth it in the end.
Bummer big time though you do manage a humorous post about this. Moral – tutus forever! Or something like that. (KymberlyFunFit) I hope you heal completely.
Ha, thanks 🙂 And I’m so glad to see that you’ve grasped the true takeaway from this post! 😉
Aww, sorry about your DNF, but you did the right thing. And also, at least you got that sweet shot of Craig. I think that makes the DNF worth it. There’s always the next race. In brand new shoes. So you have that to look forward to. 🙂
Agree on Craig’s pic! Although, that man is always worth a few good pics– I have an entire album, I think. Not sure how Cindy deals with him 🙂
Blast!!! But what a great running crew and fabulous pics!!!
I survived the Canyonlands Half in Moab – super awesome despite having sandy gusts of wind keep me company the whole way!
Nice work! I have a friend that ran that and she said the wind was BRUTAL!
I am sorry your PF is acting up again. I know that is no fun at all. I will send you healing vibes.
I raced in COS on St. Patty’s day. The day was beautiful and me and my best friend had a great race.
What a stinking bummer. I’m so sorry!!! I definitely know how it feels to helplessly battle annoying injuries!!! At least the weather was beautiful??? Did you have any green beer to wash away your sorrows?!?!?
DANG IT. i am so sorry to hear about your foot!!!! hopefully the sock will help!
i LOVE Cindy’s socks!!! they are soooo fun! i hope you still had a blast just enjoying everyone’s costumes…that poor pup with the beer! haha! thinking of you!
We actually both found some cute socks, although I realized you can’t see mine 🙂 I was on sock shopping duty and she found the t-shirts and bandanas we were wearing. Team effort!
Oh your beautiful state! Looked like a blast! I ran the rock n’roll half here in DC and it was fabulous!!
I’m sorry your race got ruined. I totally understand about being put in A Mood by it. Hopefully your foot will calm down soon.
Uhhh what a terrible day! So sorry to hear that. I’d be so pissed. You are super smart though for not forcing yourself through it. Rest up, use the sock, and hopefully you’ll be running in no time.
Heather, I am so proud of you for keeping it together and finishing the 5k!! Finishing a race when you’re not feeling 100% is 1000 times harder than racing the race that you set out to do……………that’s what I found when I ran my first marathon in Nov 2011 when I had cramping issues. WAY harder than running a successful marathon.
Anyway, I hope your plantar fascitis goes away and hides its ugly head in shame!!!
Ugh, I’m so sorry… running injuries are the worst! I’ve had my share, though never dealt with pf, and I hear it can be a beast. Your perfect race day will come… hopefully sooner than later. Heal quickly!
PF is such a pain. But way to stick it out and finish a 5k in a great time. I had to replace my tires over Christmas so I totally get how car crap can make you stabby. Keep icing and wear the sock and I hope your PF goes away soon!
Ohhhhhhhhhhh the car thing.. grr 🙂 The kicker is that I took it in for an oil change and a diagnosis for a noise in the engine. They couldn’t hear the noise but found the struts, which I obviously need. BUT then I took it home… and I still hear the noise. Shady mechanics 🙂
The bright side is that I have a much less bumpy ride now! Who knew?!
wow, that really sucks about your foot–sorry to hear that. I drove by City Park in the morning and was wondering what was going on! If I would have known there was going to be beer toting dogs there I would have gone for sure since I live a few blocks from there!
Your friend is the bird killer….I cannot stop laughing at that. They are everywhere…..and they are evil!
Oh so sorry!!! Sometimes you just have to listen to your body, great job pushing through and finishing the 5k by running 🙂 Have fun shoe shopping – can’t wait to see what you end up with!
Lots of my running club friends have dealt with PF in the past (or currently) and still are really speedy! You’ll be ok once the inflammation goes down. One of my friends uses KT tape with great results. Also, sleeping with a boot helps.
Sorry the race was such a downer!
I’ve been thinking about the tape but I feel like I’m trying too many things right now– I’m not gonna know which one is making the difference! If my current plan doesn’t work, the tape is up next!
I’m so sorry that you didn’t get to finish the 10K! At least you were able to get to the 5K portion of the race! I had my first DNF in November and while it wasn’t fun it was the best decision for me.
I hope you can get your PF figured out soon!
Sorry about the race :(.
You should go see my PT here in town, he was a life saver with my PF. The sock was worthless for me … and taking time off is not necessarily a good idea either. Just gotta work on strengthening those feet muscles by going barefoot as much as possible and wear low heel-drop shoes.
I’ve had a lot of people tell me the same thing, and I since that is the one thing I DIDN’T try last time, I’ve been working on it. I’ve been wearing 0 drop shoes to work, etc every day, and am shopping for mid- drop shoe to run in. Thus far (and knock on wood!) it seems to be working!
I’m so sorry about the car and your foot! Hope this week has been much better for you.
