We Live in a Beautiful World

I feel like I should cue the Coldplay song right about now…. but I won’t. In all honesty, today wins the “most random post” award, so just go with it!

I was searching through my photo archives last night because I’m on the prowl to make a few new collages for my walls. Although I don’t do a lot of decorating with artwork, I am a big fan of photography and my walls are mostly covered with various pics that I have taken throughout my travels. I stumbled across quite a few good ones and thought I’d share 🙂

And if you hate pictures, you should probably just check back in tomorrow. It’s cool, I understand!

This is the Colca Canyon in Peru. Although I had never even heard of it before venturing into South America, I guess it is known as the deepest canyon in the world– over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon! We found a guide and spent a day trekking into the canyon, followed by a second (loooooooonger) day trekking out. Pretty sure I took lots of pics so I could stop to catch my breath!!

Just a few locals that I saw walking by me in Angkor Wat, Cambodia. For some reason, I loved the bright orange cloaks that they wore.

This adorable guy was the nephew of our guide when we went into the Amazon in Ecuador. This adventure was another one of those “kinda sorta scary” moments because our guide took our boat and left us around 10pm on New Year’s Eve. I remember laying in our hut and hearing the boat roar off, not knowing where he went or whether he was going to come back. Turns out, he wanted to party with some indigenous peeps for NYE (seriously!)  Luckily, he took us piranha fishing the next day to make up for it. I was terrible at fishing, but this guy was awesome. Plus, he loved it when I took photos of him since he could see them immediately on the digital screen 🙂

We hiked up Mt. Sinai in Egypt to watch the sunset, and I could. not. get. over. the camels everywhere! I mean, they don’t just have camels wandering around Colorado! A lot of out-of-shape people hired camels to help them trek to the summit of Mt. Sinai, and I think this guy was just chilling, waiting for some business!
(Doesn’t it look like he is posing for me?!)

I think we summitted Mt. Rainier around 8-9am (after leaving Camp Muir at midnight). I am accustomed to climbing peaks in Colorado where you are surrounded by other huge mountains, so it was slightly shocking for me to get to the top of Rainier and see this! If I remember correctly, this is Mt. Hood, all the way in Oregon!

I rode an elephant in Thailand. Everyone else had a partner or a husband or something, but since it was just me, all of the male elephant drivers took a liking to the single gal. By the time I was done with my three-hour trek, I had bonus pillows to sit on, an umbrella over my head to protect me from the sun, and about a zillion photos (like this one!), courtesy of my driver 🙂

Tokyo. Pure chaos. I couldn’t get over how one part of the city was beautiful and old and green and then the next block would be flashing lights and neon signs!

Negative! If I get a good photo, it’s purely luck due to the amazing surroundings.
Where have you taken your fav photos?

Oh my. What awesome photos. I am ALWAYS behind the camera snapping. My belief is if I take enough some of them will come out 😉 In all seriousness I take decent photos and am slowly upgrading all of my gear. But would love to take a class to tweak my technique. I don’t have a fave place I’ve taken photos. I think anywhere can be beautiful when given the time and an interesting subject.

Dang, girl – you get around! 😉 Those are incredible photos. It’s wonderful you had the opportunity to take them yourself.

(And no, I’m not particularly good at photogrphy either.)

Love all the beautiful photos! I wish I would have traveled mmore before I had kids. I was just getting started and wam I had a baby. Hopefully I will be able to travel more when they are bigger..or off at college!

Great photos – love photography and slowly improving I believe. The kids in Indonesia were the same way – the loved to see their picture on the screen – they would hoot and holler and giggle – so cute. My favorites were on an island just west of East Timor. The local people had amazing character in their faces. I would have to say faces are my favorite – they show so much.

I love it when kids are like that! So many in third world countries have called my camera a “magic box” which I love. Buuuuuuut just as many have wanted to money because they are so used to getting it from tourist :/

I’m pretty sure that’s Mt. Adams you were seeing from Mt. Rainier. Hood would be a little further off and it’s a lot more “perfect”/gracefully peaked. 😉 I’m also really jealous you climbed it. I grew up in Tacoma and “The Mountain” was always in the background.

    Awesome pictures!!!!

There is so much of the world I haven’t seen…jesus!

You know, I’ve done a lot of traveling and there STILL is so much of the world that I haven’t seen. Kinda hard to grasp how huge it really is!

Good photos happen by accident with me. I agree with you, an excellent backdrop makes any photo better. I have this thing about photographing flags waving in the breeze. Pretty sure a third of my pics from the DC trip are of flags.

Wow- these photos are incredible! You are such a lucky girl, all of the amazing stuff you’ve done! It makes me want to rewind my life 10 years and take advantage of when I was young and without so many attachments and responsibilities!
I’m so jealous that you climbed Mt. Rainer. I spent two weeks in Washington, Oregon and BC last summer, and my favorite part of the whole trip was staying at Mt. Rainer and hiking around there.
When we went to Mt. St. Helens, I think we could see Mt. Rainer, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Hood all around us… I think. Just thinking about that beauty makes me overwhelmed with emotion- there is so much beauty out there!

I am glad I did so much in my 20s, but it has definitely taken a lot of time to get everything together now 🙂 The domesticity chip was lacking for quite a few years!

If you get a chance to climb Rainier, definitely do it! We didn’t go with a guide, but I know RMI Guides is a huge company that has a pretty good track record.

awesome photos…i have to say that looked like an incredible trip!

I am not much of a photographer, however i do try. My favorite place to take photos is in alaska, but I am a typical dog owner that my favorite subject is my little english bulldog (shes not that little anymore lol…)

It was 4 or 5 different trips… although an around-the-world would be sweet!

I take so many pics of my dog that I’m even nauseated with myself 🙂 So…. it’s cool!

Wow. You’ve been to some really amazing places! Did you travel to Thailand on your own or just ride the elephant solo? I don’t think I’d be brave enough to travel abroad without a travel companion.

When it comes to photography, I’m pretty much the same as you. Sometimes I get lucky.

    • Reply Heather @ Just a Colorado Gal at

I’ve done a lot on my own, but I actually did Thailand and Cambodia with my parents! They were on a different elephant ride 🙂

I cannot stop staring at these photos! I am so envious of all your travels and love hearing about new places (such as that canyon in Peru, funny how we have never heard about it). Tokyo is at the top of my list of places I want to visit!
