Just a Colorado Gal

Whale Watching!

Guess what? Sunday was my sister’s 28th birthday!

That, in itself, was really bizarre for me. I remember when I was 28, and now my “little” sister is that age. Weird. Are you allowed to say those kind of things when you are almost 30, I wonder?!

Anyway, in honor of her birthday, my parents, my sis, her boyfriend, Sang, and I all went on a whale watching tour!

The crew, sans myself. I have to be the paparazzi.

I’m not typically big on the tour thing, but I was truly excited for this tour. It is mating season here in Hawaii and I have seen quite a few whales breaching off the coast. In fact, we saw one going breach crazy while riding our bikes last Friday in Kauai–he must have jumped out of the water 6 or 7 times while we watched from the bluffs above!

Our big ol’ whale watching boat!

We headed out of the harbor and immediately saw a whale! Literally, I couldn’t believe how close we were to shore when my mom saw the water spout from his blowhole. I’ve done a lot of scuba diving in various oceans, and I’ve never seen a whale…. but seeing this happy guy so close to shore made me realize that during mating season, the humpbacks are truly everywhere!

Sadly for me, I suck at taking pictures and my camera was nowhere near good enough to zoom in close enough to make my pics worthwhile. Luckily, my dad is better than I am, so he managed to get a few videos. Sorry in advances for the blurriness and shakiness, but hey– I think they’re cool!

How awesome is that?! Not to be a total dork, but I was seriously enthralled with these whales. Watching their humpbacks slither through the water made me understand how sailors of past days may have thought they spotted the Loch Ness Monster!

You know what was even cooler? The captain had turned the boat around by Diamond Head and we were heading back to the harbor. We had already seen 5 or 6 whales, includes a mama with her calf, when we happened to come across a MASSIVE sea turtle! It was just swimming alongside of the boat, and when we got close, it popped its little head out of the water like it wanted to say hello! Of course, when it realized how large the boat was, it quickly dove into the depths of the ocean, but not before my dad managed to capture another video!

If only I could be as cool as my dad and manage to grab awesome videos at the drop of the hat. Sigh. Maybe one day! In the meantime, I have this glorious pic of my sis and I. You know, because I am sure you’re dying to see our two faces mashed together! What do you think, do we look alike?!

For the record, I know my commenting system is completely whacked out, and I apologize. I previously used Intense Debate and they recently made me switch from using a Widget to some type of installed program. Unfortunately, the installed program made everything go crazy, and I haven’t been the best about dealing with is since I’m on vacation and, well….. don’t really want to! I did delete Intense Debate and am hoping that my “regular” blogger comments show up tomorrow. If they don’t, please bear with me. I will get it to work eventually!

Have you ever been whale watching? How do you feel about the ocean– love it or does it scare you?
I used to be kind of creeped out by it since I am such a mountain girl and let’s face it– there isn’t really a lot of water in Colorado! However, after I got my Open Water and Advanced certs for scuba diving, I got the opportunity to do a lot of diving around the world and I grew to love it. Now I think it’s tied with the mountains 🙂
Anyone else having major Intense Debate problems??

Do you think my sis and I look alike?
