Like the X-Treme Challenge Arena!
This place is located next to the rock climbing gym I go to, and Angel and I stuck our heads in a few months back. We observed that it was very similar to one of our favorite childhood shows, American Gladiators, and talked about how much fun it would be. And then we dropped it…until Tuesday night 🙂
We all showed up, not quite sure what to expect and whether or not we truly needed to be wearing the athletic wear the liability waiver suggested. Naturally, Craig took the “no loose clothing” suggestion to an extreme:
Yup. That happened.
Anyway, the X-Treme Challenge Arena turned out to be a blast for a group of adults! They started us off with a “warm up” where one person stood on a podium, and we basically launched exercise balls at them, trying to knock them off. After we were sufficiently warmed up and loose, they set up various stations around the arena. Some of them were a little frustrating, but other were awesome!
For example:
The human cannonball~
See Adrian holding the exercise ball? And Angel on the swing? Yup, she got to push off the wall (not visible, on the right) and launch herself at Adrian as hard as possible. The goal if you’re the guy? To remain standing!
Human Jousting~
I am pretty sure the picture does this one justice!
Out-of-Control Bicycle~
(Can you tell I am making these names up?!)
Yup, we got to tether ourselves into a harness and ride a bicycle around in circle. The point? Once you really got the momentum going, the bike would lift off the ground at the corners and you could bank off the bright yellow walls. Seriously. How freaking awesome is that?!
Hang Tough~
This series of ladders, monkey bars, rings, and poles was strung across the length of the gym. The goal was to get all of the way across the series, but no one was able to do that. Missy, the one shown in this pic, made it the second farthest, and she is one tough chica! Climbing the ladder was pretty nuts in itself!
And then, yeah….we went and ate Mexican food and drank a couple of beers. After all, it was her 30th! 🙂

I’ve never done it but back in the 90s a friend of mine was on.the.show!
She was badass….
She was a gladiator or one of the challengers? That is AWESOME! I remember the reruns on Saturday night at like 10pm on TBS…my sis and I would stay up late and watch them. LOVE THAT SHOW.
That looks like the most fun birthday ever!
I talked to my BFF today and she kinda loved it too 🙂
LOL, this looks crazy amazing fun.
Wow….looks TOUGH. I think I would be interested in doing what you did the first time around ….peeking into the gym. Then I would have to go from there. Yeah, some of it looks pretty cool.
For my birthday, though, I think going for a nice trail run would be more my style. 🙂
OH my gosh that looks like SO MUCH FUN! I’m dying to do some human jousting 😀
Oh man, the jousting could get a little…violent 🙂
Is this near Denver, I want to do this when I visit my friend!
It’s just north of Denver in Thornton!
That looks so awesome. Especially the bike thing, that would be intense! But the ladder/monkey bar thing? Um, no. I would climb all the way up and fall off on the very first monkey bar!
Most people barely made it up the ladder and if they did, they only got a few monkey bars in. But you were harnesssed so falling wasn’t bad 🙂
This looks like it would be a hilarious experience!
It really was! During one challenge, I couldn’t stop laughing long enough to participate!
Whoa! American Gladiators was pretty much my favorite show when I was a kid. My birthday is next week and I’m pretty sure I’m going to totally rip off this idea.
DO IT!
That looks awesome! I would totally be up for it.
That looks like fun, I would try it!
Which rock gym? and I need to give this a go! Going to take Court up to The Spot in Boulder for some climbing sometime! That’s my all time fav gym!
I usually go to Rock n Jam in Thornton on Thornton Parkway and Washington. The place literally shares the same building!
That all looks awesome! So cool!
That is the best way to celebrate a 30th or any birthday! Looks like a great time – who knew places like that existed?!
…oh my gosh, talk about a good time! If it would work for a 30th birthday it would work for a wedding anniversary too right?
OMG how fun!! That is definitely a great way to ring in a birthday. I kind of love human jousting.
WHAT!?! Is that in denver!?! That looks awesome! racingthestates@wordpress.com
That sounds like a lot of fun! That’s a great way to celebrate a birthday, I think.
