You know what’s annoying? When you spend 30 minutes typing up a recap of how you became a criminal over the weekend (seriously) just to realize your computer crashed and deleted the entire draft. Naturally, I can’t let that story go un-shared, but I don’t think I have the emotional attachment to retype the entire story right this second. Sigh. Y’all are going to have to wait until tomorrow to hear about my shady and illicit behavior!
Instead, let me share some fun news: guess what I did today?
I registered for the Xterra Cheyenne Mountain Trail Half Marathon!
I was thinking about trail races the other day and remembering how much fun I thought the Evergold race was last September. I’ve already registered for a trail 10k in June, but I’ve been thinking of a bit more of a challenge. So, Xterra it is! The elevation gain doesn’t look that insane (maybe around 1,500-2000 feet of gain, max) and it’s in the fall when the temps are cooler. It’s gonna be good!

Tips for long distance trail races?
Have you ever done an Xterra race?

I can’t wait to hear the criminal story!
Good luck with the trail race, I have never done one like that.
Seems like you’re signing up for races left and right…but that’s awesome because it means you’re healthy this year. Hooray! Now, I can’t wait to hear your story. I can only imagine 😉
Nah, not so many–June is a bit crowded but it’s only bc I have the bike tour, a 5k and a 10k trail race 🙂 July is totally empty!!
Hmm, can’t wait to hear the story of your weekend adventures!
I love trail races. I have done one half marathon and a 10 miler, and they were a couple of my favorite races ever. Have a great time and good luck!
No tips but this sounds AWESOME! Can’t wait to hear the recap!
Trail races are my favorite! I haven’t done one since moving to Colorado, but the ones in California were really fun. They are so much more laid back. The Xterra races in Southern CA are put on by a great crew. I have run some as well as volunteered. Xterra offers medals (many trail races do not) and usually have great food after the race. I cooked eggs for runners one year!
Tips? Don’t worry about your pace. The terrain makes pacing tough. Also, trail races are rarely the correct distance. A half marathon might be 13.5 miles or 12.7. The cool thing is that there is no such thing as a true PR in a trail race. Don’t be afraid to walk up steep hills. Sometimes trying to run up the steepest grades just wears you out for the downhill, where you need your legs! When running downhill, pick your line and go for it. Trust your feet and don’t brake with your legs. When you try to slow down, that is when you are more likely to fall. Pack out your trash! If you eat a Gu etc, please stash the empty somewhere. One of my pet peeves is seeing Gu packs on the trail. It is not like a road race where a street sweeper can get the trash. ****the most important tip? HAVE FUN!
tips for trail racing? run more trails 🙂 Forget about times – cant compare them to roads – power hike the hills – enjoy the downhills – splash in any creeks and have as much fun as possible – then.. a cold brew at the finish line!!!
I like it 🙂 I’ve done lots of trail races before, but nothing over a 10k. The longer distance will be new, but I’ve hiked longer distances, so maybe it won’t be that shocking?
When your posts get eaten it is the WORST. Well actually the worst is when it’s papers or stuff for work, but that’s still bad. Long distance trail races – slow the hell down and practice eating real food in your training runs!
That looks pretty!! I might be able to stand it here more if trail running was an actual option!! Pavement pavement pavement!!
